That's my issue with horror movies as well. Wish "jump scare" was part of the MPAA movie ratings. I can take the suspense, but don't give me that cheap shit.

Yeah, it's so overused. I remember watching the remake of The Crazies back when it came out and there are so many jump scares I was legit missing them because I was taking a sip of my drink or whatever.

Horror movies? No thanks, I get my scares from following the world news on climate change and rising fascism.

:gigachad-hd: I was too scared to watch Thomas the Tank Engine because of that one episode where the train is trapped behind the wall of dirt

As a kid I was actually scared of a Thomas episode where two diesel engines hang around in the dark and clank chains while going 'we are revolutionary engines'

I hate horror movies, or anything featuring guts and blood. Which is why I think it's weird how The Thing is one of my favorite movies of all time.

I find that gore and body horror are two pretty distinct things that evoke different reactions, so that doesn't sound that strange to me.

The Thing is one of my favorite movies, too. Despite all the gore, the fear that the movie evokes is mostly because of the isolation and paranoia. The atmosphere at the start of the movie is already like a prison. A dozen men are stuck together with no way out and keep trying to prove to each other they are the manliest one, and if they don't, everyone else steps all over them.

They can barely communicate in a civilized manner when things are fine, so obviously they become even more uncooperative as the situation gets worse. They quickly turn from their usual yelling and insulting each other to almost starting a shootout over who gets to be in charge. The alien is less of a villain and more of a vehicle to drive up the existing tensions between those men, and that is where the real horror lies: they could beat the thing, but probably won't because they cannot stop trying to out-macho each other.

Unrelated: I recently rewatched it, and at first I had not realized there isn't a single scene in the entire movie without a loud wind howling in the background. Even when there is music, the wind doesn't stop for a second.

See, I'm pretty good at getting immersed in horror and being spooked by it. But in that setting, I am the spooky thing in the haunted house. Ghosts are not as badass as I am. It didn't scare me at all for that reason lol

I don't like watching them, but they're a fascinating art form. Practical effects are fucking rad and fear is a hard emotion to evoke properly, so it's interesting to see how good ones did it, their thought process, whatever. Chad with virgin friends because I appreciate people enjoying them and reporting back :gigachad-hd:

Oddly enough I don't mind gore or body horror in the slightest.

Actually the only reason I have any penchant for the horror genre at all let alone now being a full on fan is because usually the first competent film someone makes is vaguely in the horror genre. It's a really good genre to work low budget and learn the craft and low budget horror has a fun schlocky aspect to it that other genres can't accomplish as well. A really bad horror movie can still be fucking awesome, a bad comedy is just not funny for example. It's the best genre to do a lot with very little. The effects can be mediocre if they're filmed well, especially since low light is common, acting doesn't need to be great cause most people have never faced death and don't know how they'd react but know they'd at least be scared so it's easy for the audience to relate regardless of performance so you can get your mom and her bowling league to be your cast. Doesn't take a genius script, it just takes decent film making to work and even if it doesn't work it can still work. It's a very good starting place.

Bad comedy turns into shit, bad horror turns into good comedy.

Exactly. I feel like people in this thread think horror is always scary. I love the good ones and really bad ones and will never bother with the in between. Most horror movie fans are watching the worst crap ever put to a dollar store 30 movie DVD and having a great time with it.

I was scared by horror as a kid, but now I just find it kinda stupid. I laughed at heriditary because it was dumb, it wasn't a masterpiece. I honestly find the horror inside non-horror genres better. By this I mean I get way more freaked out by particularly scary stand users in JJBA, Chimera Ants from Hunter x Hunter, or the SA-X parasite from Metroid Fusion. Those are way scarier because I didn't see them coming and they break the rules of their world a little bit.

Remember that one time someone here posted that horror films wouldn’t exist under socialism because enjoying them is malsocial or something dumb like that

    • GreenTeaRedFlag [any]

It makes sense, horror usually represents some sort of underlying social tension or fear, so once socialism allows direct democracy the concerns will be immediately dealt with and won't develop the same way. The only real fear would be invasion, which is more readily assuaged by action flicks.

Even assuming all social tensions are resolved (which is super idealistic), that would just mean there wouldn't be any good horror movies. If nothing else, I think there'll always be a demand from people who want to get spooked and cuddle their SO.
