Yeah I know that identifying people with the products they consume is bullshit but the brain forms associations nonetheless

Make an effort to detach the game from your internal view of its fanbase and then play it after a few years

I played it despite similar hesitations and even though it was a slog at times I'm still very very glad I played it through

The Soulsborne games. I later tried Bloodborne and had an okay time with it but still felt myself actively trying to hate it because I hated how fucking obnoxious the fans were (seemingly less so nowadays, self-awareness I guess?) about the difficulty of those games.

I still remember when dark souls came out (demon's souls being the first entry in the soulslike genre) and the PS3 dark souls players mocking xbox dark souls players for struggling and not being real soulslike players because they didn't play demon's souls.

I still want to play the games but I'm not going to interact with the fanbase.

I remember buying Dark Souls after hearing it was basically the best shit ever and then being absolutely convinced that I had been sold the wrong game after I played it for a few hours

I love difficult games, but mostly ones where it doesn't take a 3 second long standing animation to drink a healing potion

Honestly the only people I've seen obnoxious about the difficulty are people who've never played them before. People who have actually played them know they are nowhere near as difficult as people make it out to be.

Honestly, any Reddit community eventually drives me out with the comically low effort memes/screenshots/horny posting. Maybe I should stop using it :thonk:

In this case it's more like the fandom inadvertently prevented you from making a terrible mistake

Every form of media that has individuals with some noticeable level of popularity. I recently learned about the shit with Kanye straight up harassing Pete Davidson and Kim Kardashian and the circus around Kanye enabling all the bullshit. His stans are out here sending death threats and shit. I love the NBA but in recent years, stans being toxic as fuck as made me root against players I generally used to enjoy watching. Notice this shit with stuff I don't even delve into, like K-Pop. Usually it used to be relegated to online spaces, but I see this shit spilling out IRL where people can't stomach any level of criticism against the object of their affection. I'm just ranting
