ASBmilitary account on Twitter is now suspended. Was an ambiguously leftish and pro-Russian (but not uncritically) account with decent updates. Apparently such groups are still on telegram but damnit I don't want to use telegram.

Apparently such groups are still on telegram but damnit I don’t want to use telegram.

The Silicon Valley firms have been working in lockstep with the US national security state for decades. We saw this when all mention of BlueLeaks got stripped off of Twitter and Reddit in the midst of the George Floyd uprising. If we want to see what the other side is seeing, the only way is to leave the American walled garden and look at the platforms they're using.

I'm not a big fan of Telegram either, but if that's what they're using, and what little that leaks out of Telegram gets scrubbed the second it hits Twitter or Reddit, that's where you gotta go. I just wish they used Matrix or something. :yes-honey-left:

The last thing I want to do is hand out my phone number to obtain contraband news.

Yeah it's deleted, I saw the video though it was civilians complaining about the Ukrainian military positioning units and weapons in residential areas.

Very naughty, it would show some of the "russians are shooting civilians left and right" wasn't quite true, uh oh!

I think Ukraine is using a good amount of the foreign aid on reddit propaganda. There's a thread yesterday on r/worldnews with like 50k upvotes about how russians "risk freezing to death" due to a -20c coldsnap.

For one weather forecast doesn't show this temp, and two uhm Russians are uh checks notes, not used to the cold?? Let alone Ghost of Kyiv, the "russians are trying to blow up the nuclear facility", snake island, etc stories blasted on every major sub with $1000 of awards.

Yeah they are running this like a DNC campaign for Senator or something, instead of a military operation. Just pumping money into ads and astroturfs.

It's too bad Russians are being way too professional at this and not trolling them back. I guess winning the physical war is better than winning the reddit/twitter war.

Even if swaying the public opinion of westoid redditors had any real worth (it doesn't), they're too stupid and propagandized to actually question anything to be swayed at this point. Especially when they have a lazy out to engaging with any dissonance in "rUsSiAn BoT" accusations.

True but it wouldn't be much work to make a few joking jabs at them, they've been surprisingly modest and tightlipped about the whole thing. And it's not like that's really helped them much in the court of public opinion, they got hit with every possible sanction and retaliation anyway.

Imagine expecting some poor old lady hiding in a basement with the recently orphaned children of the village to give you a straight answer about their political allegiance under such duress. That kind of statement could easily be a death sentence when the fighting is over and revanchism begins in earnest.

I understand the interest in trying to document the way the locals are coping with the war, and what they think the future might bring, but there's something which feels off about putting such defenseless people on the spot about something like this. If they volunteer and say something optimistic or pessimistic about the invasion, that's one thing, but it's another when they are just trying to survive and find a way to take care of their families as lives and infrastructure are being destroyed around them. The reporters will come and go with the front, but these people will be left behind to deal with the aftermath.

Yeah, looks like he has been in Donetsk since 2014, only leaving really to go cover the Armenian-Azerbajian conflict last year, though interestingly he was mostly interviewing on the Armenian side, it looks like.

I haven't found anything that seemingly has fairly direct sourcing capabilities. There's also a lot of fairly gross jingoistic stuff out there that just adds a lot mor noise than signal. I think I'll probably just read Mark Ames until I have time to do some research.

ambiguously leftish and pro-Russian (but not uncritically)

Strong disagree, I would consider them to be thinly veiled right-wing Russian nationalist tbh. This doesn't equivocate them with all of the other crap coming out of the Ukrainian side by any means, but I think this site heavily overrates their posts which are almost always given without corroborating sources. Useful for what it is though, but it's not like they were suddenly going to pull liberals into thinking that there is any other nuance to the situation.

I haven't seen anything about them that suggests right wing aside from the pro-Russian bent itself, which if that's enough on its own we'd have to call r/GenZedong right wing (ASBMilitary is less overtly pro-Russian than them, actually).

They're also relatively clear on what is or is not corroborated, or at least they claim when they consider something to be or not. Whether they are actually correct is the same thing as we have to apply to any media criticism: take it with a grain of salt and review their track record, and the toughest part of all: what do they consistently avoid or leave our?

Speaking for myself, I would consider a "pro-Russian" position to be right wing, if I felt like my position could be described that way (which I have had comrades suggest to me while I've been discussing the situation) I would consider it imperative to self-crit. GenZedong is full of memesters and is not a place I generally take seriously, I have no opinion on them.

Whether they are actually correct is the same thing as we have to apply to any media criticism: take it with a grain of salt and review their track record, and the toughest part of all: what do they consistently avoid or leave our?

Wholly agree comrade. To be frank, I don't think this entire situation has been approached with an adequate amount of criticism (self directed, and externally directed) by a significant portion of this site. Almost off topic from @ASBMilitary in particular, but I was hoping to see more question marks the last couple weeks than I've observed, especially since a majority of the site took a big L on the chances of an invasion happening in the first place.

They require more personally-identifiable information than other apps and I haven't had time to see whether there are spoofing options.

The only thing that's required is a mobile number, which is a high bar, but equivalent to What'sApp and other apps of its class. Twitter is just as identifiable these days.

Lol yeah if that's the standard to beat, then yeah you'll have a tricky time.

Probably not enough to meet your standard, but according to internal FBI documents tg is the hardest messaging app for them to subpeona (probably cause it has relatively few Western ties). They may disclose your phone number and IP address though, if you're part of a confirmed terrorist investigation.
