THE ENTIRE FUCKING GAME IS ABOUT USING YOUR IMAGINATION, WHO THE FUCK IS GONNA PAY $300 FOR THE SOLE RIGHTS TO USE GANDOP, THE WHISTLING JUGGLER WHEN I CAN LITERALLY JUST DO THE SAME THING WITH A FUCKING PENCIL AND PAPER?
The idea of D&D (and most all pen and paper tabletop rpgs) is the sharing freely of ideas. NFTs (which are uniquely stupid and don't even do what they are "designed" to do) just intrude on that very fundamental premise. I fuckin' hate nerds so much dude
Let's be fair here, a overwhelming supermajority of dnd players think this shit is stupid as hell.
Uhh aksually the idea of D&D is convincing four other people to sit in a circle and let you torment them psychologically for your own sick amusement for five hours every sunday. /DM
If the players didn't want to subject themselves to that, maybe they'd actually crack open a rulebook for once /DMgang
Hah hah imagine if players were literate. Wouldn't that be something!
Wasn't the online tabletop service basically dead on arrival anyways? Like the guy who was supposed to make it got murdered or something so it never got finished.
Yeah that's what happened. A lot of 4e's bad ideas were anti consumer, but a lot of its good ideas were ahead of their time - if it had been finished, a Roll20-esque online tabletop would have really made the game a lot more playable.
WOTC has the right idea now though of just letting other companies do that stuff and focusing their own efforts on the books.
The guy found out his wife had had an affair, shot her and then himself.
There's an official WotC-run DnD league or somesuch where if you want to play anything other than a starting level 1 character you need it to be certified that the character was leveled by playing in official WotC-run events. First time I've heard about it I thought it was a joke but apparently it's pretty popular.
The Adventurer's League is pretty neat actually, you could describe it as the "D&D MMO" (not to be confused with the D&D MMO). Though since you go from group to group you never really develop the rapport with the other players that you do in a long-term group, it's most valuable as a structured way to meet other players IMO.
One year I went to a con, i think it’s when the descent in to avernus quest line was a thing, they had all of the tables team up to fight the big final boss of the day
Ay least I think it was AL, it was a while back. Pretty cool either way
It's cool that WotC runs games anyone can participate in, but is the whole certified character thing necessary? Couldn't they allow people to create new level 5 characters for a level 5 game? Maybe they do, it's been years since I've heard about it.
They really throttle treasure and stuff in order to keep anyone's AL-certified character from being overpowered, and in my experience the AL really attracts a lot of powergamers who want to be the strongest in the party so I see the reason for doing it the way they do it, but I would agree that the rules could be a bit looser and it would probably be fine. Like let players jump in at any level, but restrict magic items to the ones you get as treasure in a module you play, or something like that. That would solve the problem of getting games together past level 5 because it's almost impossible to play high level stuff in AL unless you have a regular group whose GM just so happens to be an official one.
There can never be anything to stop you from downloading NFT art since you need to be served the file in order to view it.
yeah but it does mean that NFT content can just be pirated incredibly easily
Code is Law so long as the other code it's interacting with is compatible and it has no exploitable flaws at any step in any protocol and everything it touches is equally confined to the blockchain it exists inside and the chain doesn't fork
All they have to do is convince some regulatory body that it's a good idea to encrypt jpegs and the rest of us are fucked.
You know what makes DND fun? Real-world scarcity of cool backstories
I remember playing back in middle school with a friend who would absolutely always make the same character - a Ranger whose parents were killed by Orcs.
He'd be so thrilled to know he could play NFT D&D on a budget.
:desolate: calling it now the newest peak of NFT shit is gonna be some type of parasocial NFT fusion trying to financialize social interactions via a gig friend service or some such bullshit (like those fucking boyfriend/girlfriend rental things in Japan).
"How to describe cryptocurrency schemes in 6 words or less."
Nah, I meant social nft networks, with paying transactions to creators answering dm and stuff.
But this as well lol
Somehow it will be Pewdiepie regaining social media dominance and at least one NFT will involve blackface and will be worth 5 million dollars.
If a Deep-State Faction Warforged with a preprogrammed hatred for dogs and marital issues isn't one of the backgrounds I'm gonna quit DnD outright.
But seriously though, they do understand that DnD is meant to be played without a computer, right?
I've played online sessions too, I actually took that backstory from a character I had played on one with people from here. These crypto grifters should be sent to life in the gulags though, I'm getting real sick of this shit.
After the revolution the only crime will be being really annoying, and the only punishment will be having your internet capped at 1/mbps
Hey, check out this NFT I got, it is from the Climbing Guido collection in Liberty Green
™️Oh, this is just the thing to add to my Anez collection!
:hide-and-seek:
I mean, I play periodically with the Axe&Sickle discord group and we use a Fantasy Grounds license to do 3.5e online. I've also got a Pathfinder game that I play bi-weekly with friends in a different time-zone, which absolutely wouldn't be possible absent some kind of online interface. I've had a ton of fun setting up a Foundry server to accommodate the game, complete with mood music and sound effects and little animations for dramatic events. I also built a Kingmaker atlas-map for another game I'm a regular in, complete with ambient weather to represent the changing seasons.
And that's just modern day shit. D&D has been on the computer since at least the 80s, in various forms and in some of its most entertaining incarnations. Whomst among us hasn't shouted out "Sticks to Snakes!" while lobbing a bunch of twigs in the air, after playing the old Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara side-scroller?
read it at least some of the paizo and dnd people were like 'jeez this guy is a freak'
can't you just play dungeons and dragons and not engage with the NFTs
or just don't play with that dude which shouldn't be a problem as cryptobros aren't exactly people who are typically fun to be around
Akshually instead of experience points we're using microshares of my buttcoin backed microcoin.
the developers of the game start focusing on NFT trash instead of meaningful content
Damn. Too bad there aren't a thousand D&D knock-offs and indie games, plus five prior editions that are absolutely swamped with content, which don't require a $50 jpeg link to participate in.
I still haven't made it over to 5e. Which is kind of a shame, as I've generally heard good things about it.
Lol. They named it after the magical ribbon that was used to deceive and bind the Fenris wolf, an incident during which Tyr famously lost an arm.
Buy our product! It's sure to ensnare your money and deceive you as to it's actual value!
I fucking love people who don't understand mythology and end up telling on themselves.
Also I lover that Gizmodo wrote an entire article about these asswaffles just so we could all collectively enjoy shitting on their terrible idea.
If I understood the math behind any of this it would be funny to get an arts grant and make a crypto currency that depreciates in value every time it's traded and ultimately deletes itself, with mock-NFTs based on popular crypto nerds and some kind of pokemon battle system.
EDIT: I often see one of the ingredients in Gleipnir being the "Sinews" of a bear, something which is supposedly an impossible or non-existent thing. I'm told this is a bad translation and it should actually read something like "The good-sense of a bear", bears apparently being thought of as hasty and temperamental at the time.
