nah, I'm with you. I hold Da Vinci in incredibly high esteem--I think there are maybe 10 people in history who are his equal--but I don't get the Mona Lisa.

I guess my charitable interpretation is that it's a somewhat interesting painting by a truly legendary historical figure, and so there is a fascination with it that has little to do with the artwork itself.

Like, if Jesus had painted something, I imagine people would want to see it, even if it was complete shit.

It's famous because it's involved in a bunch of heists and attempted vandalisms.

After it was taken to France by da Vinky, it sat around at Versailles as basically unknown curiosity, until the French Revolution, where it was moved to the Louvre (which had been converted to a public art museum) and began to become known as a da Vinky painting. To the general public though, it was basically unknown.

It only really gained popularity in 1911 when an Italian nationalist stole it, and it became a big deal in the international press as they searched for the guy who stole it.

Not that boring I would argue. It's a competent work as a whole, the brush strokes are a bit weird, parts of her are translucent in a kind of cool way, the background is a weird DnD elemental fey realm landscape or something for some reason... I have never found the smile very special, but that thing about the eyes following you around the room is kind of true. It works on a monitor as well, so you can open the image and walk from left to right in front of the monitor and she kind of always seems to be looking straight at you. It's cool.

Obviously living up to the legend is utterly impossible when it comes to the world's most famous painting, but I wouldn't say it's boring or bad.

best explanation for the painting that ive found is that it was actually da vinci painting himself as a woman

Fair enough. I agree it cannot compete with many of Da Vinci's other works, and it's not my favorite painting or anything. "World's most boring painting" was a bit of an exaggeration though.
