Apple could eventually bring ads to more of the apps that come pre-installed on your iPhone and other Apple devices, including Maps, Books, and Podcasts.

ATT gives users the option of disabling the tracking tools advertisers use to display targeted ads. It may have contributed to the overall growth of Apple’s advertising sector, as it has left businesses scrambling to reconsider their advertising strategies. According to data that Insider obtained from research firm Omdia, Apple’s advertising business grew 238 percent to $3.7 billion in 2021.

So most likely not like shitty banner ads or full screen "wait 5 seconds" type ads that have nothing to do with the app. But instead paid "recommendations" of specific content relevant to that app. e.g. Maps will show you McDonalds at the top of the list when you search "food" because McDonalds paid them to, Podcasts will show you some corporate media podcast because they paid for it.

Honestly I'd assumed they were already doing that.

They're still ads, it still sucks, but nowhere near as shitty as normal ads.

Still insidious and unwelcome. I do not like being told what to think. Apple thinks they're my mother or something.

Oh yeah I genuinely already assumed they were doing that, and that Google was doing it like 3 times as much.

If I’m gonna be advertised to this is infinitely better than the other way, at least I am actually looking for something like what’s being advertised.

Don't underestimate how bad it can get, it is like doing a google search and the first page is all payed links, this absolutely will have long term consequences.

Oh no why aren’t their baseball stadiums designed from the bottom up to corral people into buying overpriced food and to look photogenic so that the live camera broadcasts are marketable to advertisers

I hate Apple so much. When I briefly worked in web development I had to use a bunch of Apple devices and there wasn't a single upside to the experience. Overpriced laptop with a shitty keyboard, a garbage mouse, and a single USB outlet so that you have to use a hub if you want to do literally anything besides charge your computer. All of the super innovative interfaces and input methods were faulty garbage that I constantly had to work around.

I work in retail now and I'd love to go back to the (relative) pay, ease, and comfort of web development, but the only thing that would make me pause is having to use those candy-coated devices for babies.

Yea the price was like 1/3 of an equivalent Samsung and it runs great, I can see why they're not allowed to be sold in North America

The superior operating system is the one that comes with manufacturer bloatware and banner ads on the lock screen?

Android is basically the Windows of smartphones.

Apple supremacists really need to get over themselves

I was a little harsh on Android there. It more reflected my personal taste. Overall I think both OSs are good for different reasons and for different people.

You’re never gonna convince me that’s not what this is really all about.

I spent $150 on my current 8. idgaf what other people think about my phone. I don't go outside enough for people to see it anyway. It's about multiple things, mostly personal and opinion based.

But also from a programmer and autistic perspective, I just really like the idea of a tightly integrated system like Apple's. I wish I could program something like that.

Article says it's allowing business to pay for higher-up search results; while not great it's not like you're gonna get a "punch the monkey" banner in iTunes.

IMO a custom security-focused ROM on a Pixel is the best for privacy and security. But then I'll take an iPhone over everything else (Samsung, Moto, stock Android Pixel, Pinephone) after that. At least iPhone with iCloud disabled.

I agree with this 100%. For a while I’d also say that iPhones held their value longer, but they’ve kneecapped the cheap and easy screen repairs since the iPhone X, so I can’t super stand by that anymore. I’m riding out this 7s, which I’ve replaced pretty much every major part for at least once, and then I’m hopping ship, but only because I’m confident I can install CFW

I wish I could just download an extension that blocks ads on chrome because I hate change, don't want to use a new browser, but for some reason mobile ad blockers are either "use OUR browser" or just don't fucking work with chrome

edit: any time I want to read some nerd wiki shit I want to scream because these fandom wikis will have ads and shit literally blocking up 75% of the screen FUCK YOU WHOEVER DID THIS

If only some old philosopher wrote a thing where he observed that capitalism always uncouples the monetary value of a product or service from the actual value of its raw materials and labor. Oh well.
