WHY IS THERE BOTH A 21,1MM QUILL STEM STANDARD AND ALSO A 22,2MM ONE? AND THEY'RE BOTH USED ON 1" FORKS! GODDANGIT!
There's already one though! It's 22,2mm! Everybody uses it to the point that I had to do some actual deep digging through forum posts to find out there even was a 21,1mm version!
Absolutely yeah. Probably not on new bikes in the western world, but ahead was only invented in 1990. So anything before that is a quill stem (unless converted), and even after the fact it takes a while for a new standard to take hold over the entire industry.
Couple that with the longevity of bicycles and you still get lots of bikes with quill stems on the road
So there’s dimensions definedin inches or mils or what’re we and it’s been a while but aren’t a bunch of modern bike weird metric standards just conversions of those original normal dimensions?
There was a time up until about 2012 when it looked like the standards were settled, and in the last 5-10 years, both mountain bike and road bike standards have gone all over the place. I can't keep up and stuck with the 26 inch wheel, double/triple front chainrings (which give you more range than 1x, if you actually climb, you really do need it), 1 1/4 threadless stems, head set sizes, how disc brakes mount, like several dozen bottom bracket systems, etc. Problem is they started phasing out new parts like suspension forks and even decent replacement tyres for the old sizes, which means I'm basically probably going to be forced to upgrade my whole bike, just as they planned. It disgusts me, I just want to ride.
the propietary bullshit also seems to make a comeback in a bad way. It's annoying. I dread the day all the inter-compatible Shimano 8-Speed Stuff isn't around anymore, that allowed you to jury rig together so much stuff. Maybe Microshift keeps making shimano compatible stuff.

For a 26"? Those still seem pretty ubiquotous from where I sit, even the odd gravel bike has them

From a cursory look, seems like most 21.1mm have bmx/mtn sized bar clamps (22.2mm handlebars) while 22.2mm are mostly for classic road bars (31.8mm). Not exclusively though, just seems more commonly done that way.
Nowadays you can get all kinds of bars in 31.8mm or just use some adapter shim if they are 22.2mm. So 21.1mm seems like a legacy standard at this point. 22.2mm bar clamps seem to be out of fashion lately unless it's BMX or some other 'non-competitive' bike design.
It's basically a legacy bmx standard that was entirely abandoned in favour of just using 22,2mm, decades ago.
Luckily apparently the bicycle cruiser people kept using it, so there's like a single factory in china still churning out 21,1mm quill stems that gets sold under 25 different brand names. Sooo...thanks to the most annoying cyclists on earth for that one.
