    A few reasons:

    1. Lemmy is ML only, while this is multi tendency

    2. Lemmy has an established culture that doesn't really fit neatly with chapo

    3. It's not splitting the left, because this is federated software. It's designed and intended to be split into multiple websites that can then interact with each other. Once federation is working (it's in development), users from either site will be able to subscribe to communities and interact with users from the other. The best growth we can hope for isn't for chapo.chat to get huge, but for many Lemmy based sites to appear and federate with each other. That creates a decentralized internet community not beholden to tech companies.

        Well they just didn't have the idea to be federated I would guess. It's a lot of extra work to make federated software, so I get it. Stoked for Lemmy to be federated though!

          Yeah it wasn't a big thing at the time it was made I'm guessing - not sure what's stopping them from migrating now though other than the awkwardness of data migration
