Obviously the correct leftist thing to do is release the animals back into the wild so they can go extinct due to capitalist habitat destruction like God intended

Zoos that are essentially wild life preservations that have some portions of that habitat visible to viewers who are encouraged to support the preserve by getting the chance to see some of the animals, those are OK i guess. But zoos that are primarily just trying to make money off of showcasing exotic animals to people are fucked obv, they should be abolished and their animals rescued and given to the former type I mentioned. (Sadly, many of them probably couldn't survive if re-wilded)

They evolved out of the private menageries of european royals, so in that sense they are wack, but in the modern age they do necessary work

here in the uk, some of them do good conservation work and keep the animals in relatively good conditions
my local wildlife park for example has very big enclosures that are all grass and foliage instead of the concrete pits you see in a lot of them
they make sure the animals are properly stimulated and not sat around bored all day
they also don't really care if you complain about not being able to see the animals because of all the greenery lol, as I found out when i overheard a parent argue with a zookeeper once

I support good zoos. They're the reason a lot of animals haven't outright gone extinct. Good zoos and good zookeepers keep their animals in tip top care and are pretty great about contributing to zoological research and have breeding programs that re introduce endangered and extinct species back into the wild. For a great example of this, see the case of the Mexican Red Wolf and how zoos were responsible for bringing them out of extinction.

As always, research the zoos you support and don't go to shitty zoos that keep animals in sub par conditions.

Zoos do a lot of conservation work to preserve habitat for the animals they exhibit and they wouldn't have the money to do it if people didn't pay to see the animals. And another thing, zoos are many people's introduction to the natural world that fosters a connection with animals. Being able to see these beautiful creatures up close gives kids a connection that can last a lifetime. It makes people care about the animals in a way they may not otherwise.

The only ones I've seen are depressing as fuck so idk, I heard a coworker refer to preschools as zoo for kids and sometimes I agree.
