Gab got hit hard when they were running a non-Mastodon server/software they made and thereby used the Mastodon project because it was free/libre open-source. Mastodon's community went "uh, no." and blocked them because despite being technically allowed, they didn't want the alt-right.
The one reason why I can see them not wanting to put us on their allowlist is the fact that we'd scare away the HN crowd that would definitely flock to this type of project. Then again, the two other instances they currently federate with are also radical leftist instance (also, I'm pretty sure that nutomic hates HN).
