daily reminder that "vikangz" were a cope meme that swedes came up with cuz they were butthurt about losing finland

It's literally the swedish version of "superpower by 2020"

"vikings" only became a thing after Geijer wrote the poem Vikingen. 1811.
Coincidentally, Sweden had just lost the Finnish war, and all of Finland, which halved its total land area. 1809.

"vikings" were cope. The swedish version of "Superpower by 2020" or "TUPAC ALIVE IN SRBIJA"

there is so much other shit like that swimming in white history, which never gets called out because it's about whites

Poster below me says they became popular after Denmark was bombed, which may be true as well. Glancing the wiki, it seems to coincide exactly with the date that Sweden lost to Finland (1807ish). So it was probably multiple scandi nations suffering heavy losses and coping.

I found some hints towards what you're talking about in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Copenhagen_(1807)#Aftermath but "viking" doesn't appear on either page, I must not understand Danish Romanticism

but “viking” doesn’t appear on either page

it's why you can't understand history from reading wikipedia alone (not trying to slight you here)

the Vikingen poem, by Geijer, is what popularized the Vikings. written in 1811.
Sweden lost to Finland in 1809.
Denmark and Norway were bombed into bankrupcy by Britain, in 1807-13.

All of Scandinavia was getting simultaneously owned at a common point in time. There was a lot of anger, Geijer recognized this and wrote the poem, and it was memed into reality

hey, you're actually right but there's another thing. Sweden lost the Finnish war in 1809. The poem that popularized a lot of viking stuff (Vikingen) was written by Geijer in 1811.

I didn't know about the Danish/Norwegian loss to the British at the same time though.

So I think it's safe to say that all of Scandinavis suffered heavy losses, got buttblasted, and memed cope into reality across national boundaries. Later the meme was picked up by British/US whites, who adopted it as a symbol of pan-white superiority.

To be fair, the whole nationalist romanticism thing was something that was just going on at the time. Later on in the 1800's Finnish people became very interested in Karelian folklore and shit

This reminds me that there are and have been small communities of what are essentially Finnish hoteps who believe that every ancient king and kingdom in recorded and prerecorded history was actually Finnish but that they were somehow fucked over by the dastardly Swedes/Vikings who went on to enslave Finns and to erase all traces of ancient Finnish culture... and this slavery goes on even today in the form of mandatory Swedish classes in Finnish schools. It's wild

Because the democratization of internet and social media has merged genres a lot, and plenty of aspects of what once made up "nerd" """culture""" is now found everywhere. And while I don't outright define myself as a stereotypical nerd, I share many of the caracteristics, mainly due to factors such as upbringing, education and family/friends.

But yes, nerds on reddit suck because nerds mostly belong to the middle/well-off middle class, they therefore have the same shitty politics you'd associate with woke capitalism; and the fact they're Am*rican makes it worse. The question I always ask myself is how the fuck did gaming/fandom communities turn into cesspools, but I guess it has something with liberalism being a gateway to fascism once you scratch deep enough.

works the reverse way too. Normies became nerdier, but now nerd culture also became normier (less focused on discussion of ideas and intellectual curiosity)

It's because the nerds run the spaces. The nerds cultivated the spaces into nerd spaces. The spaces that aren't run by nerds aren't nerd spaces.

Reddit as a whole was a niche of the internet that blew up. Its upper-tiers of mods were created when it was still a niche and it was ultimately a tech nerd site to begin with. They are literally all nerds.

If you're talking about liberals (aka everyone reading this), it's people meticulously curating their social media personas for decades now. Perfecting their NPR voices. Getting just the right pic of themselves with a coffee cup in front of their face for their profile pics. Everyone's a canned ham now with no actual personality or life experience.

The worst is when you meet someone irl and you know that they're a redditor just by interacting with them. Not like a casual browser or anything, but some hardcore bacon narwhal goober that has spicy takes about China or "females."

The word 'nerd' has been co-opted and mainstreamed. The original hacker culture was made up of laid back left-libertarian people really into computers. Not the most politically sophisticated people on the planet, and usually a bit awkward around women. Despite that, the culture was remarkably free of racism, homophobia, and structural sexism. There was a canon of cerebral entertainment that most nerds enjoyed, but it wasn't a part of their identity, just their love for embracing weirdness and subversion.

These days it seems to be about people who really like some kind of entertainment, be it a show, or gaming. As an old school nerd, this bothers me. No, you're not a nerd if you watch Dr. Who, or play videogames, or went to university. And being a political conservative, or a liberal, that's just plain not weird enough to be a part of nerdhood. Go away, posers. It's like chuds pretending that neoconservatism is 'punk rock'.
