Birds are cool. The only thing cooler than birds are extremely bird-like non-avian theropods. Because that's when the really weird shit happens. Like Microraptor gui. He's one of the many feathered dinosaurs of the Jehol Biota, the ecosystems of the early cretaceous period in what is nowadays Liaoning province in northwestern China. Like many of these dinos, the fossil is so well-preserved that impressions of the feathers can be seen, especially under UV light. Even the melanosomes, which determine the color of the plumage, become visible. They look almost exactly like the melanosomes in crows or jackdaws, so we can tell Microraptor gui was a dark bluish black.

Oh, and it had four wings, not just two. It had contoured feathers almost exactly like these on the wings of modern birds both on its arms and legs. It's still unclear how exactly it moved through the air, it could probably only glide from tree to tree instead of being an active flyer. It probably lived in the treetops of the coniferous forests in that area, similar to a flying squirrel.

What makes this even weirder is that there was already a ton of actual birds like Confuciornis flying around in that area at the time. And several different peterosaurs as well.
