I'm no saint, I chuckle when bad things happen to bad people. But I'm also worried about these purges. Historically purges against "extremism" has always targeted the left out of some centrist horseshoe theory bs.
Unlike the 1970's the Left in the United States hasn't racked up a bodycount. Meanwhile right wing terrorism has taken 100's of lives in the past decade.
I think we are in the clear.
When has the United States ever needed dangerous leftists to react against the threat of dangerous leftism?
We took out Allende, who came to power in an election. We tried the same thing with Morales and Chavez, too.
It's still there, parler just has the billionaire funding behind it.
lol they can't even just shut them down -- they have to give a little window to organize a lifeboat
As much as I'd like to jump on the wishful thinking bandwagon, if this shuts them down for good, then they're insanely inept.
Though, on the other hand, they started up a "free speech" social network using AWS as their backbone, so...
Edit: Welp, their entire site got scraped before going down, so it looks like they were insanely inept after all.
inb4 another hosting service gives them a sweetheart deal because of :freeze-peach:
guess we’re small beans rn but who hosts chapo.chat? are we vulnerable to something like this?
Iirc, the VPS we use is in France.
@ScreamoBMO can you answer this?
So as long as we don't call California sparkling wine champagne we are good?
I just checked and at first glance chapo is hosted on OVH, a great French hoster that is pretty OK (I use it myself) - they won't remove stuff without an actual warrant and the like, historically.
I also hope the infrastructure doesn't rely on the OVH cloud offer but instead uses traditional dedicated OVH servers and their own load balancing implementation (if needed), as it would make switching to an alternate host easier just in case.
The Mercers have enough money to buy their own datacenter and host Parler, but they won't.
Guess it is back to 8kun and 4chan/pol for most of the smoothbrains.
If Parler has IT people that have even limited skills it shouldn't be that hard for them to switch to more traditional hosting in less compliant jurisdictions honestly. The fact they thought relying on AWS for anything was a good idea, given the content they host, was fucking stupid of them.
Yeah I've worked at places using AWS that are about as apolitical as possible and just slightly eat into a sliver of one Amazon product's market share and we even had a "if Bezos decides he hates us and shuts us down without warning" plan lol
This is the result of Amazon worker organizing, right? Very cool if so.
