It's very cathartic to downvote bad takes. I'm not saying the downvote button should actually do anything, but let me click it and then have it show the number go down by one on my screen, even tho it doesn't actually reduce the real number of upvotes on the post

Counterpoint: I like seeing the purple "downvotes disabled" boxes appear. If you click fast enough they go right up to the top of the browser page.
Because the devs implemented it as an emergency patch following transphobic assholes going on downvoting sprees, IIRC.
