I wish all the modified cars driving through my neighborhood that are as loud as jets taking off a very engine failure. Also, I hate that I can hear a highway from miles away. I don't mind train horns because train good.

Cars are worse than trains in every way imaginable it's hilarious. I get irate just thinking about it. I know it's a first world problem but cars have been a detriment my whole life. My brief visits to countries with adequate public transportation have been infuriating

That sounds basically like linking mental illness to living in an urban area, since that's where most noise pollution would be. And at that point there's so many confounding variables I think it would be a struggle to make sure you're isolating your data to just looking at noise pollution as the independent variable.

There are quieter parts of urban areas and structures with better sound dampening. It's when you can't escape the cacophany that really sucks.

There are studies linking reduced academic performance to noise pollution (in one, students in classrooms that were subjected to noise from nearby elevated rails performed more poorly than students on the other side of the same building).

As far as mental health effects: the difference between normal ambient city noises and persistent, intrusive, and/or unpredictable noises can be dramatic—take it from someone who spent a year working nights and then coming home to all-day construction about thirty feet from my bedroom...

I used to live in a place where these kids would like ride a gokart in like a suburban street all day long and play basketball.

I used to live in a place where a dog barked all night long.

I live in a place where jabronies like to rev their stupid ass cars in place for hours on end. Just going vrooom vrooom vroom. Sitting. LIke...

I don't understand the appeal of making your exhaust sound like it's about to explode and driving 65 in a suburb

Sounds like my neighborhood. About two years ago the modified cars took over, revving and popping and drag racing all times of night and day, sometimes for 12 hour stretches. My partner and I are going legitimately insane

I used to live just a few blocks away from active train tracks. The regular train sounds never, ever made me feel panicky, the way the car noises do

And they just sit in a parking garage revving their engines for hours, they aren't like racing, they are just sitting there, pressing a gas pedal and blowing raspberries for hours on end. LIke, you'd think they'd get bored. Like how can you possibly enjoy listening to your pistons buttslap super loud for hours on end. What kind of enjoyment can they possibly be getting? Unless it is only to annoy other people.

They gonna make Wayne Brady choke a bitch one day.

Well... some engines sound really good, like some V6 and V8 engines. Though you'd probably would have to have a passing interest in the technical aspects of cars to enjoy it (which I do so...). However, fuck those people revving those 4 cylinders in Honda Civics (which more often than not is the people being loud with their cars at night).

The fartcan exhausts are just the worst. No your car does not sound better, it sounds like me shaking a can of dried beans. Also I'm pretty sure straight piping your 3 cylinder 70 horsepower Renault/Dacia doesn't improve its performance that much, if at all.

Also isn't it funny that loud exhausts are basically illegal and police have the ability to stop and fine those people, but they won't because police don't give a shit about the people's wellbeing.

I'm pretty sure if you reported it, they would show up and spend a few hours giggling with the car people going `GUN IT'

Does anyone know if cops are running around with decibel meters in their cars? I'm not sure they'd be able to pull someone over and be like "you sound loud" and not measure dB to fine them

You don't need a dB meter if you can hear it from over 1000+ yards away and inside every room in your house. Some cities have regulations that if you can hear it from X feet away you are in violation. But it is probably rarely enforced. IIRC Seattle says like 80 feet.

I'm not a lawyer, but my understanding is that removing a muffler, or tampering with the original design of the muffler in order to make it louder is illegal. In a democratically run society, mod shops would be closed.
