Wasn’t there some theory that Gaddafi got assassinated because he wanted to start a rival pan-African currency?

I have no idea how economics work, can someone explain to me why currency type matters? I know currencies can fluctuate in value and what not but why does it matter which one is being used because they can be exchanged assuming that you aren’t planning on holding on to the money for a long time. Why is it better for Africa to have its own currency and how will that hurt the west?

As far as I understand it is if you force everyone to use the dollar for things that countries need like energy/oil. And the US is in control of the money supply (how much gets printed/circulated). Then you basically force everyone to approach the US diplomatically, because you will need dollars in orders to get your oil/energy.

Adopting a new currency would circumvent that

This is very true but let’s be clear if there was a sankara today china would have him neutralized

Edit: by neutralized I don’t mean assassinated. They have other tools at their disposal

Lulwhut? Which leftist leaders has China "neutralized" recently? Despite the quarterly "Has anyone seen Kim Jung Un?!" news hits, N. Korea seems to be getting along just fine. Did Beijing disappear any ranking leader out of Vietnam recently? Did they assassinate the Ayatollah of Iran, and I just haven't heard about it yet?

They have other tools at their disposal

I've got a tool at my disposal too. That doesn't mean I go whipping it out and slapping people with it.

china did not have the same economic interest in africa at the time.

I remain skeptical about Xi on foreign policy when it comes to conditions on the ground and siphoning off resources at the expense of labor. Chinese corporations are not charities

siphoning off resources at the expense of labor.

Please be more specific. You're making a broad and incredibly vague claim that can't be responded to. What are they doing? Where? Which specific thing is the siphoning off of resources at the expense of african labour? You're alluding to imperialism without saying the word, what specific thing are they doing that you believe is imperialism?

Can you provide examples of China actually doing this? or do you just assume they are because that's what the west does all the time

A few quick thoughts... I mean, I realize people are taking my criticism of China the wrong way. I don’t think it’s reasonable to even suggest that China is doing “imperialism” in the sense that the west has and still does. It’s just not accurate and makes no sense. But when being critical of china’s economic influence, some will jump to the conclusion that it’s just China bad discourse.

China doesn’t use hard power save for a few occasions, and for that matter doesn’t even wield soft power (diplomatic strangling and sanctions). They do however, have a history of doing cia style shenanigans - moderate rebels type stuff, as well as neutralizing MLM movements in Myanmar and elsewhere. Economically they are extracting resources and surplus value of labor from Africa. No different than what Elon Musk would have done in Bolivia. China doesn’t need a coup to get what it wants.

If you think in terms of Lenin - imperialism being the last stage of capitalism, China has usurped America as an imperial power in that its capital is not only flowing to the global south but to America. Chinas foreign investment helps to make it’s currently a competitor to the dollar as global reserve currency, which would be the final nail in the coffin of American imperialism.a

Very minor compared to the heinous crimes of the west, but still
