There’s no fucking way people are paying hundreds of dollars and burning kilos of fuel to “own” an r/art tier png that you just can right-click and save, right? Surely we can’t be this fucking stupid??

It's a jpeg (or .png or .gif etc) with a unique code attached to it that cannot be duplicated.

Basically, a bunch of nerds found a way to add scarcity to something that can be duplicated infinitely. Said nerds buy crypto art to store their money in. Much like with fine art auctions, it's used for money laundering.

One of my friends in liberal mountain sold a piece they made in 15 minutes while tripping and it sold for a ridiculous amount because DRUG ART.

    So yes, it's that stupid.

    So, so stupid.

How can it not be duplicated? Like if I run $ cp cypto_art.png pirate_art.png how could they prevent that from being a byte-for-byte copy?

Ah nvm. Anyone can copy it but only one person is the official owner because blockchain. Its just selling the illusion of ownership.

It's like how I can own a print of the mona lisa, but it's not the mona lisa. The energy consumption is just the inefficient computer method for telling the mona lisa from my print if the mona lisa.
