Like, it's not even close. The 1977 cartoon is crisp, has beautiful artwork, and more closely matches the spirit of the books. Jackson's Hobbit trilogy meanwhile is a bloated mess. I was so bored and uninterested I couldn't even finish the third movie.
The only thing I remember from the new movies is how bad the CGI on Legolas' horse was @ the Dale scene in the (2nd?) film and the shoehorned love story

When we were very young my sibling and I had only ever seen the Rankin Bass cartoons
We found Bakshi's LotR in one of those bargain bins and thought it was the missing film, and then had night terrors for weeks because the monster design in Bakshi's film is on another level.
Very different, but good in its own way.
If you get a chance check out Wizards, it's Bakshi but it's an original fantasy story and it's fucking nuts. I'm not even sure how to describe it.

Finding out that The Hobbit is actually anime is a real "Waller Frey eating his sons in a pie" moment for me (I am notoriously anti-anime but in kind of a good natured way).

I just accept the first two Jackson movies which were somewhat decent (minus the "love story") and fill in the rest with the final part of the 1977 cartoon. I just want to forget about the pile of shit that was the third Hobbit movie...

Jackson made a whole movie out of a part that the book skipped because the main character was unconscious.
The part where the one dwarf starts comically fighting with his arms and legs sticking out of a barrel was where I tapped out. I actually left the theater lol, mostly because I was so bored/annoyed up to that point.
It's like, Jackson understands that the original book was for kids but then doesn't actually make it a kids movie, just does silly stuff like that that no one likes.
The movie had whiplash between slapstick and serious grimdark shit. Just a mess of a trilogy. Del Toro should have done it, one movie.
I always forget I watched the first hobbit movie because it was so lame and forgettable. The animated films also benefit from not having the Peter Jackson visual mono-culture that LotR suffers from ever since the live action stuff came out.
I disagree, I think that the first 2 (Well, the 2nd one up until the very, very ending) Hobbit movies at least are better than the 70s animation and I'd be more down to rewatch those personally.
I'll probably give you Battle of Five Armies tho, that one was a significant drop in quality.

Jackson's trilogy brought Azog from the dead, cut off his hand, made him white lol, and had him chase them to drum up suspense. I just wanna go there and back again for gods sake :grillman:
