A new study of Texas prison inmates provides more evidence that coronavirus can spread even in groups where most people are vaccinated.
A COVID-19 outbreak at a federal prison in July and August infected 172 male inmates in two prison housing units, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report released Tuesday.
About 80% of the inmates in the units had been vaccinated. More than 90% of the unvaccinated inmates wound up being infected, as did 70% of the fully vaccinated prisoners.
Severe illness, however, was more common among the unvaccinated. The hospitalization rate was almost 10 times higher for them compared with those who got the shots.
It echoes research into a July outbreak in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where several hundred people were infected -- about three-quarters of whom were fully vaccinated.
Such reports have prompted a renewed push by health officials for even vaccinated people to wear masks and take other precautions. They believe the delta variant, a version of coronavirus that spreads more easily, and possibly waning immunity may be playing a role.

You basically have to be on death's doorstep to be classified as a serious case. Same criteria for hospitalization. Sometimes they actually get mad at you if you show up to the hospital and that's not the case!

Being 10x less likely to be hospitalised is fully consistent with the numbers we saw earlier.
If the vaccine reduced your chances of infection by 50%, and that once infected you're 10x less likely to get hospitalised then the vaccine is 95% effective against hospitalization.
I mean the vaccine reducing your chance of hospitalisation by 10x means the vaccine is 90% effective against hospitalisation. So I really don't get what you're trying to say

But if vaccines prevented transmission enough, even if it wasn't 100%, and enough of the population was vaccinated, the virus would eventually dwindle to zero. That's now completely off the table.
That was never the stated goalpost of anyone who knew wtf they were talking about. Can you find me any article by any expert from early/mid 2020 saying "yeah, eradicating covid is a believable and reasonable goal"?
I mean China has done it. Vietnam almost did it. New Zealand also pretty much did it. Eradication of covid was a realistic goal, just not realistic for most of the West I guess.
I would not consider that to be zero covid/eradication of covid. Even countries which have done very well, like Taiwan, SK and China, still have cases (China is getting like 25~100 a day) and have sporadic outbreaks. That's not zero.
Zero covid would be the eradication of the disease, the way Smallpox was eradicated.

I think you need to keep in mind that the rate of serious illness even in unvaccinated people for certain populations is already low. If you're vaccinated and sans other complicating factors you don't need to worry about becoming seriously ill, as long as you are practicing social distancing, going places with good mask adherence and wearing one yourself, etc.
Although the fear is definitely reasonable if you have some complicating health factors. But hopefully soon you will be able to get a booster shot of some kind.

I really, really hate people who say this. 3000 people are dying daily in the USA of covid. Shit is really bad. It's pretty doom and gloom. Yes, it's almost mostly because of antivaxxers, but still. The scenario is in now way even close to controlled right now. Reality at this point has a doomer bias at this point.
Imagine saying to someone two years ago, that there will be a global pandemic. In the USA, accounting for excess deaths, over a million people will die in a year and a half. There will be vaccines, but because of a new variant of the pandemic virus, and 30%+ of American's refusing to get vaccinated, deaths will return to pre vaccine levels during spikes. They would call that hellworld, because it is.

We had a huge covid wave too, way more infections than the last waves, but like no deaths, I think there was one death. 33 have died since the beginning of the pandemic for reference. 87% of 12 or older fully vaxed .
Where I am we are 80 percent vaxxed and death rate is higher than it was a year ago before there was even a vaccine. I’m concerned there is not more concern.

It’s largely the delta variant and yeah some loosening of restrictions. Also the y-over-y comparison period (Sept 2020) was the low valley before things went crazy after Thanksgiving.

Repeated exposures going on in prisons, they're stewing it in there, so that transmission rate doesn't really work out in outside world so much.
Furthermore, it looks like they were vaccinated in January, and not given a booster. Which lines up with what is already known about diminished effects in reducing transmission 6 months out

They were in a petri dish, needed booster shots, and a lot of guards were probably not even vaccinated. So, yeah, this makes sense.
It's not so much the vaccine not working, it's just a regular ol' human rights violation.

Maybe it was already obvious to some, but it fully hit me yesterday that we’re all gonna get it. I have personal concerns about long covid.
First of all, this study was done in a prison, a hotbed for diseases unfortunately, and a worse case scenario. Numbers outside of prisons will be less severe.
But yeah the CDC was saying months ago that vaccinated people can spread Delta at almost the same rates as unvaccinated folks, which is why they still need to wear masks. This was largely ignored unfortunately.
But if you're fully vaccinated, even in this worse case scenario in a prison with no social distancing or masks, the vaccine is still over 90% effective at preventing hospitalisation. But the good news is that you don't live in a prison (hopefully). You can wear n95/ffp2 grade masks that seal to your face. You can social distance and avoid large gatherings. Yes the risk is still there, and it's a very shit scenario, but you can still reduce your chances of getting Covid 19 significantlall
