AFAIK this happens for much the same reasons as it does in the US. A lack of affordable housing and secure thriving wage jobs scares young adults from starting families.

This. Lberals and reactionaries act like rates of childbirth are either mystical forces beyond our powers or young people just being selfish and lazy. The truth can be seen at a quick materialist glance at history, humans, and especially those who bear children, aren't stupid and have basically always understood their reproduction and ways to control it. When times have been bad, even in periods before modern birth control, birth rates dropped. When things were good they rose. This is just the result of 50+ years of austerity.

It’s also just a result of better access to abortion and contraceptive medicine, as well as better opportunities for women’s education. Declining birth rates aren’t really a new thing in the imperial core, so the current histrionics about them are strange

This is sort of a tangent, but how will capitalism deal with the decline of the global population after we hit peak population numbers? I've seen estimates that we'll reach peak human population within the next century or so. Up to this point, capital has adjusted to low birth rates in the Global North by exporting industry abroad or by importing more immigrants, but what will the reaction be when the system that demands infinite growth encounters a global decline in workers?

Enslave more people (its really about the balance of power more than it's about absolute numbers isn't it?) or just tell people to have more kids (or if you wanna get really dystopian, force them to! Or artificial insemination!).

The traditional way is to finance some fascist prick weirdly obsessed with women's ovaries and take it from there.

The same way it deals with everything - longer work hours in worse conditions for less pay.

I wonder if this is replicated in the diaspora groups. For example I read that Russian Americans have just as low birth rate as actual Russians

Oh no shit. So turns out it totally wasn't the place I was thinking of, which actually is a small place, but the joke works better as is.

Can someone make a graph of Italian birth rates and hexbear member count?
