The argument was that they're just Ron Paul type libertarians who hate cops and the government as much as we do, which means that when uprisings escalate that they would side with us, so really we need to be nice to them and extend an olive branch when they come out to the protests. Obviously the past few months and especially yesterday have prove this false, and shown that actually they love cops when they're oppressing and killing groups they don't like, and their anti-government stance is just posturing to bolster their image as modern day cowboy rebels or whatever.

I'm practically a libertarian ethnographer, and this is borderline ridiculous on its face.

There are vanishingly few libertarians who fit this bill. The vast majority of self-described libertarians are either embarrassed Republicans who break with party orthodoxy on a pet issue or two (marijuana policy, LGBT rights, etc.) or people who lack firm ideological beliefs but dislike taxes and bureaucracy. At best you'll get ones who will acknowledge the full horror of the U.S. carceral state, but the idea that this mere acknowledgement of reality translates to a belief they'd be willing to take a bullet for doesn't hold water. By and large, they're all invested in the current system via either material wealth or the "temporarily embarrassed millionaire" mentality, which again suggests they're not going to be any sort of meaningful asset. And of course libertarianism is rife with racism and other reactionary thought; look at the newsletters old Ron Paul himself used to publish, and look at takes on the Civil Rights Act that range from "it wasn't needed because the free market would have ended racism" to "yes, private businesses should be able to be as racist as they want, what's wrong with that?" If that's ignorance, someone that ignorant is unlikely to be of any net help, and if it's genuine racism disguised to appeal to the ignorant then of course they aren't on our side.

TL;DR: Anytime someone tries to sell you on "oh XYZ libertarian is actually alright," you should presume that person is full of shit and it should take a lot of evidence to change your mind.

How did this ever amount to a serious argument? Fascists always fight the state until they seize it (or are given it)
