When I was growing up my dad would adopt a random “foreign” sounding accent when ordering from people who weren’t white even if they spoke with a normal American English accent.

Picturing your dad delivering his Applebee's order like a samurai in a Kurosawa movie to some 17 year old Indian girl born in Minnesota.

We used to go to this bbq place and everybody there was Latino but definitely born in America, and he’d be like “tüü! …. Tüü chahp beef!!” And they’d be like “you want a chopped beef sandwich sir..?” And he’d be like “si si… tu shahp beef” and I’d just try to look as apologetic as i could lol

Almost no Japanese restaurant in the US is staffed with actual people of Japanese ethnicity. So saying "arigoto" isn't winning you points either. They're almost all Korean or Chinese owned. White people do go out of their way to pay top dollar for the few places with real Japanese sushi chefs trained in the motherland though.

Japanese food in America is garbage.

Americans who eat real Japanese food are like, what's up with this food! It's so weird and off! I wish I was back home having steak and teriyaki chicken at Hibachi Samurai next to the truck stop on the interstate.

The sushi places do somewhat often find seem to Japanese sushi chefs.

But yeah they are practically never owned by Japanese people and most mayos have no idea.

My absolute favorite is areas with a large Hmong population. It is an undeniable fact that every Midwestern grocery store in 2015 had a 6am all-employee meeting that went like:

"Soo ah, they're about ta install one a dem Sue-shi ki-aasks. Who wants ta volunteer fer it? Anyone? Anyone?" And they all slowly turn and glance furtively around and one of them says "hey Vang whatta ya... Whattaya think? About that."

I started saying 谢谢 after i hear them speak a little Mandarin, even if it's supposedly a Japanese place.

One time my parents pressured me into saying something in Japanese to our hibachi chef and he was like, "Was that Japanese? That's cool, I'm from New York." It was really embarrassing

      Jesus Christ.

My dad tried to do this to me on a random fucking vacation- Go practice your Japanese on that store clerk! Go! Just do it! Go!

I kept saying Dad, he's not Japanese. He's not Japanese and even if he was this is Pennsylvania. No. No. NO.

He finally got frustrated and went up and directly asked the guy if he was Japanese.

He was second or third generation Korean-American.

My dad died brutally which is cool

Not trying to defend yt ppl but this seems like a made up thing that has never happened. I'm often wrong though, maybe it's a regional thing.

One of my classmates was 50% Hawaiian and got detained for hours in Texas by fucking CBP because they refused to believe he wasn't Mexican and therefore an illegal immigrant even though he had his ID with him.

To be unreasonably fair to the pigs, apparently later a couple Mexican guys got mad at him because they thought he was ignoring them lol

I cringe a lot when white people say "arigato" or "itadakumasu". Yes, you've watched anime, you sound like a white person. Please eat and shut the fuck up.

Not to defend white people, but at least in my area gracias is a relatively common way to say thanks regardless of anyone’s race in the situation, and I always assumed it was just a normal “words sometimes flow between languages that share an area” type of thing. Might just be white people sucking thing though idk.

Yeah it could maybe be fine/unnoticed in the southwest or California, but you know for sure if it's some motherfucker in the upper Midwest saying it, it's because their brain wires are sparking

I know an old lady who does not have any dementia who got a South Korean mixed up with an Indian w/ both parents from India, basically two people who could not look more unalike

Dae get Spanish and Japanese words mixed up in their head? I do this all the time. There’s a lot of shared phones between the two.
