My position formerly was that those of us whose mental health was not at stake, actually should continue to go on reddit and argue with libs, chuds, feds, whatever. Not because we would change the minds of those we're arguing with but because of the countless lurkers who would see our arguments and the seeds that would then be planted. And please stfu up with "omg this guy thinks posting is praxis! har har!" because the pipeline I followed to land on /r/chapotraphouse and then here was because I was a lurker watching those arguments and I could identify the good faith and the sensical and empathetic from the bad faith, cruel, and nihilistic bullshit. And I know there were many others like me. How many of you were libs who were fortunate enough to read some good "tankie" arguments and started thinking about the implications?

That said, we really have been shut down now. Systematically. Anything that goes against the predominant neolib narrative in any major subreddit, and a vast majority of the smaller ones, is immediately silenced one way or another. We not only get downvoted to oblivion, dogpiled with flames, shadowbanned, or just regular banned, they're doing petty shit like literally not making our up/downvotes count anywhere else on the site. (I know that's inconsequential, but it's something they do that they don't admit to that just pisses me off). So yeah... at this point, it's not even worth trying to have arguments for the sake of the lurkers - as I used to always advocate for. I still say, if you think you can be heard, go there and spout some fucking truth. But they're making it so that truth can't even be heard anymore.

I don't have a fucking clue, but maybe for those of you who still are interested in trying to win over or at least sway some terminally-online hearts & minds might consider advocating for reddit alternatives. There's always hexbear to mention, but probably better just to start spamming about the lemmy fediverse. Instead of trying to engage in arguments on reddit (like I recently would have said was a good thing to do), start trying to draw the marginally open-minded people away from that cesspit of indoctrination towards places where lurkers can once again hear a counternarrative.

I just hate "giving up" on such a massive tool of propaganda like reddit is, and leaving it entirely for the three-letter agencies to infiltrate completely without repudiation - something they've been striving for and why they banned chapo and why they're getting rid of GZD, et al. Just..... propaganda works, people. Pipelines are real. We need to establish some fucking pipelines instead of letting them have them all! Gah.

You argued pretty convincingly, and yeah, it do be like that now.

I agreed with your former take, but with the way things are now on :reddit-logo: , maybe it really is time for stop arguing with them. I see watching horrible people spread horrible takes as a sort of doomscrolling, not necessarily healthy but unfortunately addictive.

If I stopped posting bad things said at the bad place, it'd be with your argument in mind, not the petty insult-laden hostility I've experienced elsewhere in this thread that ironically isn't far off from :reddit-logo: attitude to begin with.

I have to admit I'm not entirely clear on what you're saying. (?) I agree it may well be time to stop trying to argue on reddit but only because they're making it so that our arguments cannot be seen by more than two people before they're deleted and we're banned. Horrible people are going to be spreading horrible takes, like you said, and if we can circumvent that in any meaningful way, it would be a good thing for us to do so (for those of us that are inclined, and who won't suffer much from the ways in which that may be detrimental to mental health). Doomscrolling is, for better or worse, very addictive, you're totally right. But when I doomscroll here on Hexbear, I get a much more accurate idea of what doom is ahead of me and what remaining avenues might be left, however unlikely, to avert it. The goal is to get those few people with a lobe or two of brain left uninfected with brainworms to see this, and join up with us instead of just eating the neolib lie-slop that would be the only thing they're otherwise being fed.

As for petty hostility, yeah... that never helps anyone ever. I think I need to read the rest of the thread more closely, I just kind of skimmed it, but so far as I can tell, you and I are in agreement.

I think you got what I was saying pretty clearly, actually.

Sometimes I did consider actively posting on :reddit-logo: again, but especially in light of current events, that's such an uphill battle with selectively enforced rules and anti-left moderators and admins enforcing those rules that I don't know if it's worth trying anymore.

At a personal level, this place is less toxic by a significant margin than Reddit, even on niche subreddits (sometimes niche interests can get really defensive over little things and they can blow up bad), but it can still get bad, sometimes for very petty and divisive reasons. Feels bad man.

You don't seem to need that site's direct influence to be hostile and shitty. You've brought your own homemade version of Reddit's typical attitude. :matt-jokerfied:

In the end, all that constant talk about reddit just ends up driving people away. Is that what you want? Do you want to drive users away? Because that is what you're doing.

You really are presenting everything you're accusing me of, and more, all because of... what? Some weird personal animosity?

The concern trolling (and passive aggression) you just posted is also prime :reddit-logo: material. I no longer believe you when you say you never went there, because you're presenting almost a caricature of the kind of person that made me stop posting there entirely. Yes, I lurk, but if I argued with people there again, I'd get rage messages from people like you all day. Again.

You're throwing the insults here. I'm responding to them as they come, and keep coming.

I say this with unfortunate seriousness: you might want to try (or more likely, return to) Reddit, because with the way you've presented yourself today, you'd fit right in.

I'm not sure why that is. /pol/ was never permanently destroyed, even if it was closed and renamed a few times. Ignoring /pol/ didn't make /pol/ go away and the "don't feed the trolls" dogma of those years only helped spread /pol/'s "ironic" fascist ideology over the rest of 4chan and outward from there, dropping the "irony" part over time when it was convenient.

I may have put that badly, what I mean is:

-destroying pol is the only way to deal with it

-if you believe pol is analogous to reddit, that's the only way to deal with reddit also

-posting screencaps from r/news is not going to destroy reddit, maybe the opposite

I never planned or hoped for posting to somehow destroy :reddit-logo: or /pol/ for that matter, but I have my doubts about "maybe the opposite" considering just how much of a failure "don't feed the trolls was" in /pol/'s nascent period in preventing its ideological spread.

Ignoring places that millions of people visit and read from every day is like ceding territory and then pretending it (and the people that go there) simply don't exist.

I actually agree that deplatforming is the only truly effective way to fight them.

My point is until that can be done, until that is even possible, outright ignoring things isn't helping and pretending they don't exist seems more like a personal preference being pushed on other people than some helpful or useful praxis.

At the least, the idea of "/pol/ is full of a bunch of nazis" eventually raised enough public awareness where now without being prompted and without saying anything, I often see /pol/ directly associated with nazis (fortunately, usually as a negative) when it's brought up by internet strangers. If /pol/ was somehow thoroughly ignored nonstop as some sort of blanket mandate that everyone followed, that awareness would have never happened.

I hardly use reddit at all anymore but that's exactly the reason I appreciate people posting bad reddit takes here. Hexbear is the only social media I use regularly so if not for comms like the dunk tank I'd have no idea what the wider internet is actually thinking.

Plus if we don't regularly dunk on and laugh at the libs, the overwhelming consensus against leftism both in real life and elsewhere on the internet eventually starts to make me feel like a fringe weirdo for being a communist.

    • UlyssesT [he/him]
      ·

That's how I felt about it too. Ignoring them doesn't make them go away and pretending they don't exist is like ceding the rest of the internet to their influence without so much as an argument.

:reddit-logo: itself is clamping down hard on dissent, so arguing there may be nearly impossible, but awareness (and some cathartic heckling) isn't automatically worse than ignoring bad things and hoping they go away instead of spread.
