It basically caused an instant public revulsion to the facts that were being distributed.
People didn't want to hear about how they affect (even if miniscule) climate change.
Well, now a company called "How good" was developed to literally do the opposite.
Its purpose is to find "facts" about how "Good"™ your choice was, and how you're actually making the planet BETTER by supporting capitalism!
The above is from the online order confirmation window at Chipotle
The entire "carbon footprint" model of individualized response to climate change was initially pushed by British Petroleum. It was deliberate propaganda to reduce the movement against climate change to personal consumption choices and implant the idea that the individual would personally have to give up many things they wanted to mitigate climate change.
Lets not pretend that "research into the environmental impact of consumer choices" was anything other than propaganda to redirect the public away from demanding systemic changes or targeting the bourgeoisie. The solution is not to encourage individuals to make better personal decisions, but for the terrible decisions to be removed as options entirely by those with the power to do so.
Same thing with companies offering to offset carbon emissions for shipping or whatever. You already put the CO2 into the air, you cant take that back. Like we only have so much land to plant trees and even if we expanded carbon capture at the fastest possible rate we'd still have to decarbonize and cut consumption.
I suppose it's a good thing but it wouldn't exist in a sane world
honestly i feel like lots of the "individual carbon footprint" shit is kinda malthusian, especially saying that you having kids increases your carbon footprint
It is handy to have when someone starts channeling Malthus to rant about how people in developing countries are having too many children.
I forget the name, but there was a family that tried to live a "zero emmissions" lifestyle for a year, and when they released a mini documentary about doing it they got a TON of hate and death threats and shit. Literally just making personal choices, but some people see you making a certain choice and the guilt they feel about their own choices makes them lash out at you.
