is 2012 modern? I'm always recommending Kids on the Slope. it's set in the 60s and has its lefty moments, but the focus is on cute characters and jazz and emotions.

Panty, stocking, and garterbelt seems like it might be up your alley since you like a bit of crude low brow humor once in a while.

And the first episode is literally about a doo doo ghost.

You might also enjoy Steins;Gate, Death Parade (its got a banger intro. But it's also straight up sad), Moribito, Mushishi, Little Witch Academia, cowboy Bebop, B - The Beginning, samurai Champloo, 91 days (prohibition america with italian mafia), space dandy, Black Lagoon (bit violent and might not be for everyone), legend of galactic heroes, nichijou (old man suplexes a deer), and these two have been consistently my favorite over the years "ACCA-13" and "Sound of the Sky" ( Sora no Woto)

ACCA-13 is a show about an auditor and it just oozes cool with its art style, music and the slow-burning plot line of political intrigue. That's all I'll say about it since it's a genuine experience and vibe I don't want to spoil. I watched it as the English dub since it seemed to fit and flow with the soundtrack better. Genuinely a great vibes show. Also I really have to mention again the soundtrack is absolutely amazing. Like it's on my top 10 for soundtracks in all forms of media.

Sound in a sky is a show that comes off like a Kyo-ani show at first then builds the world the characters live in and the story they make into a Miyazaki film that never was. Like I mean the early show was mid, but because of the intro music was done by Kalafina (great trio. Sad they've broken up) and because the writers constantly drop little bits of info that slowly clue you into the overall world in addition to the storyline following the cast it kept me hooked long enough to see it transform from "wut if we made K-On! But the girls are in the army" to something that could have been a prequel to Miyazaki's "Nausicaä" set thousands of years in the past. (If the God-Warriors or the ohm didn't exist) The show was too short, it has its flaws, it's a touch naive, but it's message of being anti-war in a collapsing world really touched me when I first watched it years ago. Also to top it out I'll just share my favorite movie series that sits at the top of my list to this day. It's a completely subjective take. The series is called "Kara no Kyoukai" or Garden of Sinners. I'll be straight up and say this series is quite literally not for everyone as its a more darker show that touches on many sensitive issues. Like the CW of the first movie is for suicide, while other movies deal with sexual assault and R, domestic violence and filicide/parricide, grotesque depictions of violence and murder, inhumane experiments, drug abuse, etc. Of course it isn't all about those things but it does hint at or outright depict those sensitive topics.

What makes it interesting to me is the method of storytelling the studio did by chronologically mixing up the overall plot into what comes off as confusing at first grows into a novel puzzle that leaves you contemplating each movie you watch in addition to the prior ones as you piece together the bits of info that you're given into the larger picture. Combined with the fact it's also a novel modern fantasy with heavy supernatural and psychological influences that gives the world an alien feeling even though it's set in the late 90s in addition to primarily eastern philosophy with very light dashes of western philosophy over contemplations of life and death, the concept of "sin" and morality, and the paradoxical nature of "TaiJi/Tai-Chi" as reciprocal bond between Wuji and Yin-Yang and the concept of human nature and origins of the soul in the ancient Daoist perspective. And importantly, for me, is that even after all of those concepts it's also fundamentally a love story between two people and I'm a bit of a sucker for those slow burn romance stories. Also the music score done by Yuki Kajikura and Kalafina is nothing short of divinely ephemeral. And the fact that Studio Ufotable did the art work and animation means that even though the films are between 9 to 15 years old they still look more modern and polished than many other films and shows that come out to this day. It really is, quite understandably, not for everyone and nevertheless I concider it a masterwork of art.

Gurren-Lagan is good mecha fun. Very pro-humanity, with a vaguely revolutionary angle.

Psycho-Pass isn’t left necessarily, but it’s got some vaguely interesting moral themes. (Don’t bother with season 2)

Kino’s Journey is very cosy (and written by a literal fascist).

Thinking about what I've watched recently, Sangatsu no Lion was pretty good. It's about a depressed teenage shogi player, and it really resonated with me at times. It is kind of slow tho.

If you like bacanno you might enjoy durarara, which is based on a light novel by the same author. Emphasis on "might" though since it's hella convoluted, definetly too long for it's own good, is a lot more "anime", and a bunch of the main characters are high schoolers. Had a great time tho, specially the first season.

Sk8 the Infinity is a really stupid show about illegal skateboard races that I loved. There's a talking AI skateboard named Carla. At one point a guy literally just hits another dude in the head with his skateboard and calls it a "technique". The character dynamics are kind of fujoshi-bait but I didn't care because the iteractions were delightful. Though I do think they are cowards for not letting the skater boys kiss.

Definetly watch mob psycho 100.

Pop team epic with the male voice actors. Pui Pui molcar. Asobi asobase (high school but it's hilarious).

I can't help you with the modern part, but here are some shows I have seen and liked over the years

• One Punch Man (it's more parody than straight shonen)
• Paranoia Agent
• Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
• Eden of the East
• Higurashi - When They Cry
• Last Hero Inuyashiki (gory, rushed ending but...y'know)

There's also lots of sports anime, like Hajime No Ippo or Yuri!!! On Ice.

Or you just get into Detective Conan, a murder mystery show, which has over a thousand episodes and 25 movies, including several crossovers with Lupin. There's an overarching story, but the episodes are mostly stand-alone, so you don't have to watch all thousand of them and can just dip in and out however you like. Except for the murders, obviously, it's relatively wholesome and clean. The show is so popular in Japan, it was the only country on earth where Avengers: Endgame didn't make it to #1 in theaters, as one of the Conan movies occupied that spot there.

i'm watching birdie wing, which is kind of a high school sports anime except it's about the golf mafia. it's a lot of fun if you like camp. the main character is 15 and the show is uncomfortably horny at times, but the ages of everyone in the show are ridiculous to the point where it somehow bothers me less. (example, the owner of the bar (the bar where where the orphaned illegal immigrants the main character does illegal underground golf bets to support live) is 18 and has owned said bar for a few years)

mob psycho 100 is another good one by the writer of one punch man (which has been recced multiple times below). nothing egregiously anime that i remember.

death note isn't all that modern (being almost 20 years old at this point) but it's a lot of fun. very camp. i assume you know the premise, but it's so much fun to just go along with the ride for. fair warning for a lot of sexism, which just gets exponentially worse with each subsequent work they do, but in death note it's tolerable for me personally.

and i'll give a blind rec for chihayafuru and showa genroku rakugou shinju which i have heard nothing but praise for from people i trust (as well as the folks over at animefeminist.com which is a good resource for figuring out which anime have gross shit even if i don't always have the same taste as them.)

speaking of anime feminist, they've reviewed at least a few episodes of just about ever anime of the last ~5 years at least, so check that out if you want a good resource. when judging whether something is good they mostly focus on depictions of women, but they also talk about racism, transphobia, and just general gross stuff that might not fit into that umbrella, like when something is more or less japanese nationalist propaganda. they also do recommend stuff that isn't all that woke, as long as it doesn't have anything to bad in it and is good otherwise.

If you like Way of the Husband, you'll probably like Hinamatsuri and Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting.

Fate/Zero is pretty amazing as a standalone series, you don't need to be into Fate or anything and you can ignore everything else after it.

Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song: Action, drama, adults.

Odd Taxi: Drama, action, one of best of recent years, adults.

Nodame Cantabile: Romance, music, young adults

Kakushigoto: Single parent, comedy, light drama.

Shirobako: Workplace, light drama, comedy. One of my top of all time.

Jormungand: Action. Merceneries led by a weapons dealer with a secret plan. It is pretty good and one of the few in the genre of realistic action.

Tried to avoid all the highchool or under 18 characters but I'd still recommend Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou. Basicaly perfect subversion of the highchool girl slice of life comedy, highly recommended but perhaps you need to be familiar enough with the genre to appreciate it.
