The DPP has tried to frame all of the last three elections as "referendums on China" while accusing the KMT of being CPC stooges. It worked to an extent in the national elections of 2020, but that messaging feels tone deaf in local elections like 2018 and these ones; where the party has plenty of scandals relating to its failure to address domestic issues.

KMT is pro some sort of reunification with mainland, but also there's quite a bit of ethnic tension between KMT and everybody else. There's a gulf between chinese people who colonized Taiwan before RoC and after. The latter group is whats at the head of the army and the former taiwanese dictatorship. It makes sense that calling KMT china stans works in national elections.
They're both US lapdog, one is crazier than the other and openly want the nationalist Japan to colonize them again.
I am shocked that the party whose leaders have familial connections to fascist collaborators during World War II would suck up to their former colonizers.
It's fascinating to see how the KMT evolved on that position. Originally in the 50s they had this insane notion that they were going to invade the mainland and be able to take the whole thing over.

It worked in 2020 because of the Hong Kong protests in 2019, and Tsai Ing-Wen's entire campaign was "we can't turn Taiwan into Hong Kong." Before she could use the riots for opportunist ends, she was unpopular enough despite being the incumbent that she almost got primaried in the DPP primaries.

Fwiw, they have Chinese names as well. John Chiang is Jiǎng Xiàoyán and Wayne is Jiǎng Wàn'ān.
Secondary English names aren't all that uncommon with Taiwanese people though, from all I've seen. Probably more common than among mainlanders?
I would guess it's more common in Taiwan just becuase of greater exposure to Western media. But it's pretty common for Chinese people who have to interact with Westerners to adopt a western name, just because the vast majority of Westerners cannot pronounce Chinese names so it saves everyone some embarrassment.
Yes, their goal was never to declare independent and more toward peaceful reunification, which is able to get mainland money and ensure stability for investment. While for DPP, they basically run on red scare, to the point that investors got spooked and run away, thus destabilizing the economy.
This is why Taiwan politics is both brainworm and absolutely fascinating. Many vocal young and aesthetically “progressive” and “socialist” types support DPP cuz they think KMT represents the interest of capital/transnational capital (who wants a cut of China’s growth. These same ones were also clamoring for Trump in 2020.

It only holds as long as the economy is good. When the inequality grows and quality of life drops. Peoples change their tune fast.
The people in Taiwan already don't want reunification with the PRC. The problem for the DPP is they don't want Taiwanese independence either. What they want is to maintain the status quo.
Thing is, if you just say "how is life in china" vs "how is life under the PRC in China", people living in Taiwan jump their opinion by like 30% lmao
