I think dogs just go by your reaction to stuff. They don't know what a kiss is, but they understand "If I boop owner's face, they're happy" so that's effectively the same.
to be fair, that's how we learned to communicate with them too
Do dogs understand the difference between tears of sadness and tears of joy?
iirc they actually go by tone of voice ie baby voice so i think it would be able to tell based on different voices associated with sad and happy not the tears themselves.
Dogs with perma-tears have come to understand that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away, but with blood.
