National Park Service article. In both cases attacks are very rare, you'll be fine 99% of the time by backing off and giving them space, and you should only make yourself look big and make a ton of noise if that doesn't work (or if it isn't an option, such as if the bear is attacking your dog).
For both kinds you want to walk away slowly while making it very obvious that you can see them. Brown bears you play dead if it comes at you, black bears you whack them in the face until they go away.
