Liberals cry about Russia and china encroaching on Ukraine and Taiwan meanwhile, in cuba they have a militarized McDonald’s next to a suburban neighborhood with huge lawns next to a torture camp full of Muslims who have never been sentenced

torture camp full of Muslims who have never been sentenced

I remember reading an article by a lawyer to one of those folks who mentioned that her client (and many others in the place) has absolutely no evidence against him, nothing even remotely close, and bizarrely he's become popular even with the guards because he's so nice and helps them with....something, can't recall (he had a degree in something and was able to offer professional help in that regard, maybe financial advice). He's got family waiting for him back home; he's not just a number or some faceless person, he's got family members who've spoken with the lawyer about him about getting him home.

Acktshually US Presidents are not authoritarian dictators who can do anything they want, sweaty. They have to govern with a coalition of unelected Generals, DoD, and State officials because that's democracy.

My favorite comment just quickly scrolling through the comments:

These people deserve to suffer the consequences of every bad decision the government creates.

Surely the colonial era treaty port eventually gets restored to Cuba but it won’t happen anytime soon.

The “lease” is perpetual and only the USA has a unilateral right to terminate it under the treaty that FDR forced upon the de facto US colony of Cuba.

Cuba doesn’t recognize the legitimacy of the lease since it was a colonial extraction but what are they gonna do.

I didn't read the article but the headline implies that the rest of the base will remain open, but I suppose you know the answer in any case.

:lathe-of-heaven: Biden will shut down Guatanamo Bay because AFAIK there are only 30 something inmates left who will be dispersed to other, more hidden black sites - which will all be expanded - and pointing this out will make liberals angrily call you a populist

Every prisoner at Guantanamo will "age out" or be transferred somewhere else, but the Navy will insist that they need to keep the base open in order to maintain operations in the Caribbean. The Bay will be an American base until the American empire finally collapses, at which point the people there will be sent to Georgia at the Cuban government's expense (by this time Florida will be entirely underwater).

Considering that apparently there's more than a few inmates who are most likely innocent (there was an article a while back by a lawyer of one those folks about this), here's to hoping if Cuba can, they either help them get home or give them a place to live in Cuba (though based on that article, those folks have families waiting for them to come home).
