Like it's too well intentioned to get mad, just realizing people don't realize this stuff. Similar to how libs think they're making fun of toxic masculinity or trumpism/bernie bros when they do this, but it's just classism.

Also I'd be the best fucking expensive therapist. Just like "no, you were right to yell at your underling. Wanna do some ketamine?"

I could not afford either. And the admittedly small amount of interactions I've had with mental health professionals has made me never want to. I mean, I think it could work, it's not the concept of psychiatry that's bad. But the only people I've ever heard it work for are the people that can afford to not only do it, but shop around for ones they like. No insurance? No money? No transportation? Small town with maybe one conservative hick therapist if any? Get fucked, lol.

dozens of professionals over 15+ years and no help. a couple actually made things so much worse that i don't know why i'm still here.

having access or being able to afford "a different one" doesn't make much difference.

Damn, I'm sorry you went through that. I was in a psyche ward for almost two weeks and it was a more traumatic experience than what got me there, honestly.

Thankfully telehealth is pretty common now so you have a lot more options if you live in a small town or have limited mobility. Also, therapy is psychology not psychiatry (psychiatrists prescribe medication mainly).

fucks me up whenever I see american private healthcare costs. like, mental healthcare apart from cbt, pills, and imprisonment without trial is effectively entirely private in the UK, but it's still only £40-£60 a therapy sesh even for more specialised types of care

:sadness-abysmal: Canada is basically the same as the states for mental healthcare costs.

yeah, think it's on account of having an entirely privatised system introducing a load of middlemen who insert themselves into everything in order to extract wealth (since you guys have got one of those state guaranteed private insurance deals, right?)

If you can't afford it at all, I recommend checking if you can get Medicaid/Medicare. People get the idea it's only for seniors and disabled people but you can often get on just for being poor especially if you're in one of the expanded states (which to my knowledge is most)

Yeah. Medicaid is for poor people. The income limits vary from state to state but it's worth looking in to, especially in blue states.

What's she implying about therapists without insurance vs. Therapists who take it?

The expensive ones without insurance probably generally get better results. But they're probably also more experienced, have more time per client, and have a generally less stressed clientele. Like both parties have less stressors, I could see it beung true

If you get therapy through your insurance then you’re limited to just the therapists that take your insurance. So there are better options if you can afford to pay for it without insurance.

Is this true? Are the therapists that don't take insurance really better?

Nah not surprised that richer people get better care. Just wondering what kinds of things they do better and if it's worth it.

i gotta be real, people who preach therapy always seem like evidence it doesn't work

My favourite is the Reddit ones that always seem to want to talk about Therapy(tm) after another rightwinger becomes too unhinged and goes on a spree killing. Somehow mental healhcare is going to save the US from falling into fascism as conditions deteriorate.
