We do not know why and it terrifies most of the government officials I've interviewed. I've personally moved to the artic circle and strangled every animal within 100km of my bunker and my thesis pleads that you do the same.
Fellow biology doctoral student here, this is tangentially related to my thesis, where i study biomes around the Arctic circle. You should probably be informed that i've just returned from a field study that produced very worrying results. We originally set out to research the wildlife around an abandoned bunker, but didn't come across a single living animal in the entire area - everything we found had recently been killed by what appears to be a chokehold with a pincer-like organ. I know how far-fetched this sounds, but it seems that all these animals fell victim to a roughly human-sized crustacean. Please be careful out there!
