Unless you've got a very light and small frame, 12g is the superior choice especially in terms of ammo availability and variety for home/self defense.
Why didn't you choose an AR or 9mm?
more power, more ammo choices, loads of good cheap choices that work for multiple situations (e.g. you can get a setup that has a tactical 18" and a longer barrel included).
