Not to pop anyone's bubble but this could also just be Lee fans from around twitter spamming the poll and not necessarily reflect truth on the ground in Virginia. Hope I'm wrong!

If this means that of the 1700 a significant proportion of the 1000+ votes for him were online support that is quite something. That means he got a tool others have to pay for with tens or hundred thousands of $s.

If you frame your argument as the preferential candidate wasn't on the list and likely got more momentum I am with you, but it is absurd to always strife for 50%+ margins. Campaigns take time and little successes.

And you think that demotivating people by confronting them with reality motivates them to see things the real way? I think it makes more sense to build up people and try to get them to organize. Though online it isn't so much a focus, however framing good news even if it isn't significant yet in a way that makes it comparable and an asset is good imho.

I'm not sure that being rude would help with getting answers. If you've tuned into a PMQ in the last ten years they rarely, if ever, answer any of the questions.

I'd prefer if they went the whole hog and started fistfighting instead of doing oxbridge debate class shit.

Fair enough, but literally every exchange is:

Opposition: "Mr. Speaker, when will the Prime Minister apologize for the egregious typeface error on his letterhead?" a loud ring of "hear, hear"

PM: "Mr. Speaker, since we formed government, we've raised living standards 36%, put more money in the pocket of every child in Canada, defeated the Coronavirus, and stopped climate change. If the opposition minister doesn't want nice things for Canadians, perhaps he should tell them that directly." whooping and cheering

Meanwhile the US and Russian versions are a press secretary taking questions from mostly recuperated career journalists that amount to repeating "please refer to the press release already made, and stop being un-patriotic. Thanks, no further questions".

The serious answer is no. He's already had to take a month off fundraising to maintain his seat in the legislature (active state legislators can't fundraise during legislative sessions), and a lot of the local progressive orgs like Justice Democrats and the local Sunrise chapter have backed another candidate (Jennifer Carroll Foy), in large part because they perceive her as more able to win. It's already tough for a socialist to win statewide, never mind someone who really can only campaign part-time. I think it's fair to say this campaign is more about building name recognition/statewide support for a future run, which is fine. Plenty of campaigns are run basically for that purpose.

Is support for Jennifer Carroll Foy somehow hamstringing leftism? She's a public defender by trade and seems to support a raft of progressive policies. She's also campaigning full-time, having announced no intention to run for State House again in order to focus entirely on the gubernatorial bid.

Yes, when a rather well liked leftist figure is running, stop trying to siphon voters off them by pushing some lukewarm progressive. They should have at least discussed this with Lee Carter so that they could determine the best course of action, rather than taking things into their own hands and watering down the playing field, allowing some neoliberal (who understands that once someone takes the lead, everyone else backs down to consolidate their voting base) to win off some technicality. This is literally Warren all over again, and you're falling hook line and sinker for it

I mean, do we know anything about the back end of this gubernatorial fight? Lee's not making this his full time job. He's still running concurrently for State House. That makes me think he knows he's a long-shot and isn't fully committed. He's potentially just a stalking horse for leftist agenda items and knows it.

This is literally Warren all over again, and you’re falling hook line and sinker for it

Sanders lobbied for Warren to run in 2016 and she turned him down to endorse Hillary prematurely. This is a distant cry from Sanders v Warren.

Of course he's not fully committed, any leftist worth their salt would know that the succdems and progressives would rather gun him down in the street than to offer even the most token support to him

Because there is one dissimilarity it means that this "progressive" challenger isn't here to punch left. Is the next thing you're gonna say that Carter is neither old nor Jewish, and therefore cannot be compared to Sanders?

They're not gonna need to ratfuck him. He's running like a distant fourth right now in polls of actual voters, not random Twitter people. He had to take a month off fundraising because he's still in office. Carter is great, but this run is about building name recognition and getting ideas out there, not winning.

We'll find out. My theory is that while they can ratfuck someone in a close race (remember how pre-Super Tuesday projections had Bernie maybe winning a slim majority of delegates), it's much more difficult to ratfuck a clear winner. If someone can win a clear majority of delegates, they can't win with the "get all the centrist opponents to drop out and endorse Biden" trick. If we're talking about vote fudging, it's more believable and probably requires less conspirators to flip a close race than a race with an obvious favorite. If it's ginning up some Alex Morse-style allegation, a clear favorite can bleed more voters and still win. If it's some unprecedented procedural fuckery (I don't know, maybe expelling him from the party or something?), it's more obviously a scam with a clear favorite, and a clear favorite has a better chance of running a competitive third party campaign.

I didn't say twitter was real life, and I didn't say he would be a clear winner. My point is that the margin of victory is probably a factor in how easy it is to ratfuck a candidate.
