My boss just pulled me aside to talk to me about "my behavior" because we bumped into each other at lunch and he saw me having a beer with my burger. I feel like having a beer at lunch is an incredibly normal thing to do. Obviously fuck my boss but am I wrong here?

Edit: I feel like I should specify in hindsight that I was off company property at a sports bar when I was getting lunch. I was not just sitting in the break room downing a cold one

I have been told in no uncertain terms that I would get super fired for having a beer on lunch and getting caught.

I have friends whose workplaces provided them with minifridges full of booze in the break room.

All depends on where you work and how much they suck.

no but if your boss thinks it's abnormal, you gotta stop anyway

I think it depends a lot on the culture at your job. Some jobs would find that normal and nothing to worry about, but it sounds like yours might not. Unfortunately, you have to read the room a bit.

It really shouldn't be a big deal

It depends. I’ve worked at places where they literally provided beer in the office fridge to drink all day.

Usually depends on whether or not it’s a small business or a large corporation, or how willing they are to police you because of your class status

Like how low wage jobs always drug test but finance bros do coke all day and tech bros micro dose lsd and smoke weed.

Definitely varies. At my current job people would often get beer or whiskey with lunch while eating with coworkers or bosses.

A friend used to work in a research lab that served beer in the cafeteria through the early 2000's or so. Apparently they had a sign that said "NO MORE THAN TWO (2) DRINKS IF YOU ARE WORKING WITH EXPLOSIVES".

depends where you are. 2 drinks at lunch in the UK isn't the same as in most places in the US unless you're rich

Lmao what is that data real?? Hilarious. Also reminds me of Catherline Liu's recent Chapo episode where they talk about how the PMC is forcing recreational drugs into tools of work optimization, instead of being like fun, meditative, or making you stare into the deep black hole of reality etc.

I have a friend that had a go at work microdosing just to see what was up. He concluded it made him fucking awful at his job

Probably don't have beer with lunch for a while then start try to get it in a glass and have a can of coke next to it.

Or maybe if you bring your own coffee to work in a thermos, or whatever those dual layered coffee cup mug things are, you can make them irished coffee with a bit of whiskey in them.

It depends on the country and the job. This is very normal in many European countries, but is uncommon in the US. Even at my jobs where beer was provided as a perk, the understanding was that it was for after work, not during the day.

I've heard stories about how back in the day when they delivered beer with horse-drawn carriages it was not uncommon for the drivers to get so drunk during the day that they feel asleep and the horse would have to find its way home by itself.

The PMC dream is privately owned self-driving cars which makes about as little sense as the privately owned cars we have today. But what if instead we had a network of self-driving taxis? You would get shitfaced, then throw yourself into one of them and be driven home while sleeping. I hope we can have that under fully automated luxury communism.

In my country there is kind of a weird culture around drinking at work. On one hand all the old traditions like having shots of bitters at breakfast on birthdays or having a beer with your lunch has been completely abandoned during the 1990's. On the other hand most workplaces have a culture of drinking "Friday beer" provided by the employer and office parties at Christmas where everyone gets insanely drunk with their bosses and co-workers.
