They seem to be of the opinion that since I don’t have little clones of myself running around that my free time is inherently less valuable.

No Sam, I’m not working two doubles so you can make it to little Timmys fucking music recitals. Bringing that little shit into the world was your fucking choice you dumbass!

Sorry, needed to vent.

The solution is for your boss to hire a third person so that this conflict can't happen at all.

I also have this. My coworker literally said "you can work any schedule because you don't have a family" meaning I should be completely fine with working late nights one week and then early mornings the next because I don't have kids not even considering that I fucking have a spouse that I would like to see more than once a week in passing

Hit em with "if you have kids you're gonna be up at weird hours anyway, so your circadian rhythm should naturally support clopens"

If we were more socially embedded, children would be a common responsibility, but it wouldn't be such a burden because we'd be invested in the little idiots.

Why not hire the child as a piano performer to improve employee morale?

That way you have coverage, your co gets to enjoy the recital, and so does everyone else.

This is the only acceptable solution. Let the kid sing for their supper, they need to grow up learning the value of hard work.

Yeah this is a common, non-insane topic on r/childfree. You're not alone.

Blaming your coworker for having kids so you're obligated to work extra hours :porky-happy:

Realizing this is your boss' problem and not yours, and agreeing to force them to deal with it by not showing up :porky-scared:

How many times do we have to tell you that no force on Earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one :sabo:

Yeah it's just pressure coming down from above on working class parents, and then their only recourse as individuals in lieu of collective action is to try and have fellow workers take some of that weight. Shouldn't resent them too much; time spent with one's kids is important, even if it's dumb recitals.

Literally yes. They do everything within their power to force the cost of education and maintenance of the next generation onto the worker themselves. Think privitizing the cost of higher education (and now elementary/secondary education), pushing the cost of schools onto local property taxes so those who live in an area pay for it and not the companies that employ all of those workers, the dismantling of internal training/development programs and instead forcing workers to pay for their own training/certifications in order to get employed.

It has to be that way since there are fewer and fewer material incentives for having children, so the rationale for having children becomes more abstract and based around a mutual hardship. I'm talking out of my ass btw

I have a 6 year old now, but almost every job I've had I told them I have "young ones at home" for at least going back 15 years.

It's not a zero-sum game between you and your coworker(s). Your employer just makes the rules that frame it that way.

Everybody should be able to work just ~30 hours a week and have plenty of opportunities to be involved in the lives of family members.

this depends on social context but if some is just asking you to pick up a shift for them then adding the reason that is normal and it would be weird to have this reaction. Now if they ask then kinda add more stuff in a judgmental/condescending way then they are being pricks

Its just increased responsibility basically, they have a bunch of shit they literally have to do or else they go to jail or their kids do, whereas people without kids mostly just sit around and masturbate when they get home

    • crime [she/her, any]
      ·

Well yeah, and all that masturbating is why I don't have anklebiters, so I gotta keep it up or else I'll have to do the parenting responsibilities. It's a lot of pressure

I mean, okay I get that, but these fuckers sometimes act like I’m the dick for not bending over backwards to accommodate raising the offspring they chose to have. Like I get it’s rough, and hell I’ll often let guys leave some work undone at handoff so they can get home to their kids, but I’m the one doing them the favor here, if anything i deserve to get jerked off to accommodating them.

Clearly, the solution to this is that 12 out of the 12 people on your team should all go on holiday at the same time. :iww: Vacationers Union.

A fake kid works, but if you have a pet that you could tell your coworkers is your child and never shut up about every single story of your pet doing something, and pretending as though they're through the lens of a baby or toddler that would really work. People with children never shut up about every inane story they have relating to the things.
