America had been pumping capital into Japan since the occupation. Japanese banks then responded through low interest loans and extensions of credit to basically anyone who asked. It resulted in a massively inflated tech sector, usually called the Japanese economic miracle. This scared the heck out of American capitalists. Japan briefly became the big evil country in a lot of American news/media in the 80s.
This fear would culminate with America raising interest rates and building alternate tech/computing sectors, Silicon Valley for one. Japan had a massive recession throughout the 90s, which is usually called the lost decade in Japan.

According to this article it was legalized in 2019, but didn't include full adoption rights. Interesting that it also mentions a referendum where a majority were against legalizing it, meanwhile other places have majorities in favor of it but it remains illegal.

It's tragic really. I know a few mixed children who have fucked up identity issues because their white dads gaslit them into all sorts of bullshit about racism not being real. Also some of their dads would intentionally cut them off from their mothers culture by preventing them from learning the mother's language.

Most Japanese people are pro gay marriage, but it probably shouldn't surprise that their government heavily favors conservative interests. The judicial system is similar to America's, with a conservative-leaning Supreme Court which will probably be the last word on this issue when they get around to it.

Every legal system sucks when its run by assholes. But judicial review is just a consequence of Legalism. At some point, you're going to have two laws that contradict one another. Enforcement requires someone (presumably with experience and core competency in law) to evaluate how this amalgamation of laws is to be executed.
When you've got a panel of legal experts who conclude the debasement of minorities is a nation's highest priority, kicking that authority to the legislature or the executive doesn't get you anywhere. You need to either :gui-trans: the court and find some better judges. Or you need to abandon the fundamental theory of Legalism and :gui-trans: the whole bureaucracy.
