Got to be the unknowing for me, there's actually a chance of them going vegan. Most of the others are too sociopathic
“Machinery that harvest grain kill field mice all the time, take that vegans”
yeah, the guy who got bamboozled by agribusiness pr sites is missing in this. also missing are the evolution understander ("we evolved to be omnivores, that means we must eat nothing but burgers!"), the anti soy boy ("you don't eat meat? are you trans?") and the "it doesn't count if it's from an organic butcher" hipster.
the anti soy boy (“you don’t eat meat? are you trans?”)
i ate so much soy i graduated from soy boy into a soy woman :trans-specter:
i saw some study a while ago where they actually measured the numbers of mice and shit living in wheat fields or something and also the areas around them, and you will be shocked to learn that when they did the harvest the animal numbers in the surrounding areas increased by roughly the amount of the animals that were living in the fields
i swear people think these (very fast) mice just stand frozen in front of the (very loud) harvesters and await the inevitable as it genocides their whole society instead of, you know, moving slightly to the side
All mice are graduates of the Prometheus School of Running Away From Things
The plants rights activists. Plants killed my whole family. I hate plants. I live to gnash their shitty plant bodies and drink their Chlorophyll.
Scumbag is probably my least hated because thays basically the last step before going vegan. Pescararian is second for me, just because I spent a few years living in an Alaskan fishing village where 1 moldy onion cost $5, but there was plenty of salmon and crab to go around. Fish was the hardest thing for me to drop when I went vegan.
Yeah I dipped hard into the scumbag/philosopher route as a form of late-stage carnism before I finally gained the fortitude to go vegan
Your comment reads like a parody. Are you being serious? Btw this is c/vegan if that wasn't satire delete it before a mod sees it and you get banned from the community
God, I can't choose. I hate every single one of these fucking people with a passion, and several of them hang around here. I don't give a shit, these aren't my comrades, no matter how much they claim to want communism.
Maybe "the unknowing" because at least they're sometimes kind of horrified when I explain to them what the world's actually like. The problem is that they tend to just transform into the philosopher or the scumbag.
"The unknowing" basically don't exist outside literally children ime
They should be called the willfully ignorant
Does unknowing include the hear no evil types who are ostensibly for animal rights if they're animals who are traditionally pets but "don't want to hear about it" because it "makes them upset" when you bring up the conditions food animals 'live' in? Or is that a 9th type
My least hated is the philosopher because watching someone existentially spiral over how horny they are to eat molding titty juice and chew on the corpses of dead animals is hilarious.
genuine question, whats the main thing stopping you?
if its that its hard, yeah i wont lie its hard for the first month or so while you figure out wtf youre doing but i was stunned at how remarkably easy it was after that, and im sure plenty of comrades here would be very happy to provide assistance. most of us were in your shoes at some stage
yeah thats really rough, i understand and it sounds like youve probably tried everything i could suggest
fwiw im a pretty bad eater, and if i buy junk food shit i will absolutely just eat it for dinner instead of making proper meals, so i always make a point that its much easier for me to exert self control briefly when im at the supermarket than all the time at home, and prevent myself from buying all the junk food shit. i tend to snack on a lot of cashews, which at least have the advantage of having protein and being kinda healthy. and also muesli bars. and having foods around that are slightly-more-effort-but-still-easy for those times when my head is really fucked - pasta with a jar of sauce, canned beans and rice, etc. spinach is my go-to veg for just shoving in stuff for some green with no extra effort, although it is kinda expensive and does go off. ive also been really fortunate to have a supportive partner who loves cooking and has helped me embrace making more shit. but yeah i realise this stuff is not always possible for everyone
Yeah, I'm allergic to all nuts, and a ton of seeds, and some other random stuff. I get by being vegan by cooking 100% of my meals; I'm always that person with packed meals, and safe snacks stashed around for emergencies. But also, while it works for me, it is work, and I understand similar people in my situation sticking with 'easy' carnist food. Though I also do enjoy cooking, even if it might be a bit stockholm syndrome; even when I ate meat, I still cooked mostly, as eating out is a stressful gamble for me in most cases.
Scumbag who wants to be not a scumbag here.
Relationships can make it harder. It was very easy for me to give up dairy (lactose-intolerant) and eggs (just not a fan), but my bf and I eat dinner together and he is a carnist. It's easy to choose vegan options when we eat out, but wanting to grocery shop/cook/eat dinner with him has been my biggest Scumbag barrier.
yeah that can make it tricky. could you maybe ask him to watch dominion(cw: extremely graphic violence) with you - framed not necessarily as trying to convert him but at least to make him understand why its so important to you? so he can at least try to eat vegan meals with you at home?
i havent gotten my partner fully vegan yet (though shes really close now) and she will still eat meat stuff sometimes when im not there because shes really paranoid about health stuff, but understanding that its important to me has meant that she will always happily eat vegan with me at home. discovering and cooking really delicious new vegan recipes together has been a big thing towards getting her in the right direction (pickuplimes is my favourite vegan recipe site btw, theres so many good and quite easy and cheap things on there). cos if he comes to appreciate that a lot of vegan food is actually tasty as hell, he might be easier to convince
( pickuplimes is my favourite vegan recipe site btw, theres so many good and quite easy and cheap things on there)
:soy-cutie: another one added to my collection
Ugh, exactly. They hide behind "no ethical consumption" to justify living as recklessly and lazily as possible. No ability for critical thinking whatsoever.
also commenting here for any lurking omnis that its also untrue and veganism is kinda an exception, cos i was "the leftist" for an embarrassingly long time
like if literally everyone woke up one morning and decided they wanted to end worker exploitation, what could they do? they could go and buy fairtrade shit, except you cant actually buy fairtrade for most things, and fairtrade certification is opaque and probably mostly bought and paid for bullshit anyway, and you pay a bunch more which is impossible for a lot of people, and even if you had full success youd only get a marginal reduction in worker exploitation anyway, and there would still be a tonne of exploitation in non-consumer industries, and all the systemic pressures of capitalism are pushing against even this small bit of success. all this effort would get you, like, 10% success even in a wildly overoptimistic scenario? its an entirely systemic problem that cant be solved at an individual level, and we cant consume our way out of
but if everyone woke up and decided not to eat meat? they can just do that. "does it have animals in it?" is a black and white question where "does it have exploitation in it?" (or "does it have climate damage in it?") is not. i know my can of beans has zero cows in it, whereas i have no fucking idea how much worker exploitation is in my fairtrade coffee (probably still a lot). if everyone just went and ate shit without meat in it, no meat would get eaten.
we literally could consume our way out of it without even needing systemic intervention (though it would help!). and the systemic pressures of capitalism dont really apply - most vegan shit is cheaper to produce anyway, and the food industry would have to adapt or die (and because "does it have animals in it?" is so black-and-white, its very hard for them to greenwash their way out of it) - they would whine but they would pander to new vegans in the same way some places are already just starting to. capitalism has structural incentives to make the process of animal ag as awful as possible to maximise profit, and structural incentives to maximise worker exploitation and ignore environmental concerns in food production of every sort, but it doesnt really have the same innate structural incentives to produce meat instead of beans
like yeah even in this ridiculously optimistic hypothetical it wouldnt be perfect - obviously pushback from powerful animal ag industries, theres still plenty of worker exploitation in vegan food, the animals already in the animal ag industry would still probably meet a grim fate, there would be a whole bunch of pbc bullshit, the reclaimed land would probably still be used for something awful, and not everyone has much access to vegan food etc etc.
but its the one area where changing consumption habits on an individual level actually meaningfully progresses towards solving a fucking horrible problem. its also cool as shit. thankyou for coming to my ted talk
fwiw i think its often a self-defensive lashing out from people who at their subconscious core know that what theyre doing is wrong and have a whole bunch of internalised guilt about it that they dont want to come to terms with, and dont want to deal with the idea that theyve been wrong about something so massive all their lives - and know that they would have to make substantial and scary-looking changes to their lives if they did acknowledge it. so they push back and lash out instead (as seen rather loudly on here a week or so ago)
but i do think a lot of those people (including the specific person im thinking of) are actually pretty close and just need the right push in the right direction, whereas actual chuds are obviously a complete lost cause on this one
i mean any :funny-clown-hammer: types who defend child porn under "no ethical consumption" can absolutely go die in a ditch, but i do get people being defensive about their treats cos people dont want to feel guilty about material things that give them a bit of joy in what can be pretty fucking miserable lives under late capitalism. i think a lot of those people also dont really understand understand just how much meat is quantitatively and qualitatively more awful than other treats (i know when i was an omni i just filed it in my background guilt along with any of my other unnecessary consumption and not doing enough praxis etc, and i really didnt get why it was so different, although i know in retrospect that my subconscious did). it took me watching dominion to really get it on more than an intellectual level, and i put off watching it and made excuses cos i think i knew deep down that once i did watch it id have to actually confront that guilt and change my ways and that would be hard and id look like an idiot who was wrong and anyway i do other praxis and there are other issues in the world that are affecting people etc etc. i didnt publicly lash out but i definitely lashed out internally so i could put my guilty conscience to rest
and then eventually i got there and i saw how much of a blind idiot id been and i changed shit and it was awesome. and i reckon most "ethical consumption" leftist omnis can get there as well, even if it takes them longer than we would like and theres defensive blow-ups along the way. and personally, i think my messages to them (including someone who may still be lurking) would be:
"watch dominion so you know why its different" (cw: extremely graphic violence)
"most vegans have been where you are, then we worked out we were wrong and we changed shit and theres no shame in admitting it, swallow your pride and get over yourself"
and "youre scared that its hard, but actually its way easier than you think to go vegan, the first month is tricky and then its really not hard at all and vegan food is tasty as hell"
im an optimist about the no ethical consumption types
for some reason this post and only this one made me think of whether or not i could make a neural network to detect v**** face
Might be the worst type.
What kind of person continues to do something they know is wrong every day?
I'm sometimes the scumbag, sometimes vegan. Honestly its just the difficulty of continuously getting fresh food where I live, as well as just being so drained of energy I don't want to deal with meal prep beyond throw some trash in the microwave, and all the cheap microwave trash has meat.
I suppose I am literally the scumbag in this photo and I need to stop eating meat.
