Khmer Rouge was the result of a combination of ethnic warfare between Laotians, Vietnamese, the USA bombing and fucking the shit out of the region right before the communist party took over, and Khmer that had been going on before the Europeans colonized and destabilized the region, and a newly formed and unconsolidated Communist party. It's definitely an explanation, but I'd hesitate to say being senile and having a grudge or wanting to obey a senile old man with a grudge justifies sending armaments, money, diplomatic support and intel to a dictatorial colonial regime to aid their efforts in suppressing a decolonial Marxist revolt, especially when it means siding against the rest of international communism.
