As a conspiratorial-minded chap, is this an opportunistic ploy, or was this movie specifically designed to function as a Trojan Horse to accelerate a fascist agenda of mass censorship?
Or just empty politics as usual? Something about this feels... different...
The problem with Cuties isn't that the movie thinks children should be sexualized, or that people would watch it and come away with the idea that sexualizing children is desirable or ok. The movie is saying the sexualization of children is bad.
The problem with Cuties is that it sexualizes children to make that point, which isn't something that can be justified by placing it into context. Especially considering that the point could have been made without doing so.
And yes, of course, child beauty pageants are also disgusting. Lots of things sexualize children and all of them are bad.
Well, I haven't personally seen the movie, so I decided not to comment on the Islam stuff because that's at least a little bit more complex. My point is that even the best possible movie would be wrong if it had the kind of imagery we're talking about.
It’s pure Michel Houellebecq shit and I’m surprised that breadtubers are just getting hung up on the “it’s actually about sexualizing children so it can’t be wrong.”
This feels like a strawman. I challenge you to source the "breadtubers" saying that.
this movie is as reactionary as Republicans and American Conservatives but because the director was dumb and went too far on sexualizing children that much by stuffing the camera straight into butts she lost everybody.
This is beginning to send off chud vibes...
People who are gonna watch this French movie anyway are already predisposed to think sexualizing children is already bad
France has the highest concentration of pedos this side of Luxembourg
Michel Houellebecq
It's just weird that you would use the brush of a polarizing white Westerner's writings on Islamic culture to paint a native Muslim Senegalese woman's interpretation of her own native culture. And I didn't see his name mentioned in the twitter thread.
The rest, I don't know what to tell you. The movie debuted internationally and in film festivals with narry a peep. But the distinguished honor of ribald fire and brimstone always seems to go to an accelerating puritanical playground in the ol' USA. I see it as a harbinger of more to come.
with narry a peep
But the distinguished honor of ribald fire and brimstoneYou're a pseudo-intellectual dipshit.
America: "A french movie that's a satire of the way that culture sexualises children? THAT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!"
Also America: gesticulating wildly at genuine real life pre-teen beauty pageants
Yes sure America. It's the MOVIE that is the weird thing about this. The MOVIE. Sure.
America: I don't care if it's satire or commentary, showing the sexualization of children is supporting it. You're going to cause pedophilia.
America: Let's watch a retired military guy murder 200 people with guns in graphic detail. What? Movies don't cause violence, that's crazy.
And this. 13 000 child marriages a year in the US, some as young as ten.
I'm guessing that's the actual problem with the movie that nobody feels like pointing out. It's literally just some random movie that wasn't that great. I think it got an award at some film festival but so what.
No, no, you must be wrong. It's just Americans and their silly sensitivities around "any sort of sexuality or nudity in films." Yeah, these are eleven year old girls being sexualized, but it's nothing new, so we should....uhh, not care, I guess.
What if we satirized the sexualization if children by making softcore child porn? So smart. Much artistic.
But is this movie really worth outrage? Couldn't it just be forgotten?
I haven't seen this movie (and I most likely never will because I'm not gonna pay for netflix), but there is no way I'm gonna take any american critique of a european movie seriously.
Fyi there are ways of watching movies that do not involve paying for Netflix
That probably involves breaking the law, and as a good christian boy I'm not down with that.
Dorks are gonna take a stand on this and still be fine with child beauty pageants which are a fucking staple of conservative regions of the country, fuck all the way off
Renault's contributions to automobile racing are the only good things to come out of France.
I watched clips of the movie and I recognize that yeah this dancing is sort of sexual. But they're fucking kids. This isn't arousing or titillating for me so I don't really find it obscene. Kids do this all the time in their rooms and with friends, it's not like the director is making up impossible pretenses for the kids to dance like this. There's also complaints about close up shots of butts. Clothes butts. Go watch the olympic gymnastics and you'll see a lot more butt there nonstop. The mere existence of a 12 year olds butt is not a sexual thing.
If this movies makes you uncomfortable then please stay away from kids or reevaluate why you're sexualizing a child who's just dancing in imitation of an adult.
I get horny during the shotput games
Yes, I did watch Matilda 900 times
This struggle session sucks because the controversy encourages people to watch it so they can have informed takes and see for themselves what the deal is, which was probably the entire marketing strategy.
The movement really seems to have an undercurrent of racism, Islamophobia, and misogyny.
Ted Cruz is going to loose the libertarian vote doing this.
But he cranked it on main on 9/11! Surely that brings them back!?
Apparently the partial nudity part isn't even true

The right has had it in for netflix since Obummer got a deal with them. There is money behind stopping netflix due to traditional production companies and movie studios. I mean there's incentive to stop streaming all together by old Hollywood. Especially right now when theater attendance is way down and streaming is probably going to come out on top. The money will fund/support right wing politics to achieve their financial goals. As is tradition.
So yeah the right would love to end Netflix. They've been trying for years and now this is their chance.
I know that context is key, but from watching clips of this, I'm not sure if the context that justifies some of the sexualization of young girls in this one.
I may try to watch it through, but it seems like a poorly made film at best, and that leads to it felling really gross from the amount I've seen.
This seems to be one of the rare instances where conservatives disliking something doesn't mean it's actually good.
IDK, i think there's too many pedos in positions of power (inc politics) for this to be anything genuine. But, who fucking knows, the right is embracing Qanon so things could get pretty fucking wild if this does turn into anything.
if this was any other year, i'd expect it to either fizzle out or the movie get removed and that's as far as it'll go. But this year, no way to know for sure.
i think there’s too many pedos in positions of power (inc politics) for this to be anything genuine
These cats rub shoulders with the Jeffrey Epsteins of the world. I'm sure they could give two fucks about the dollar menu when they get to dine-in every night. (Ugh, I felt dirty writing that.)
Honestly at first I thought it was empty politics; but as the furor from the very same slice of America that makes up a large majority of the pedophiles drug on - I started to see it as an opportunistic ploy.
It's 4am so this isn't coherent but uhh its the last four years of "WTF how dare Netflix/FB/YT/[insert social media/company here] force this multi-racial lgbtq family in my face with their advertisement" combined with Justice 4 Cannon; essentially.
Um.. Guys... Is it any wonder this movie won a Sundance award? https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/sundance-film-festival-co-founder-charged-sex-abuse-n993601
There's a lot of frustrating analysis in this thread that either tries too hard IMO, or completely misses the point. Trying to make a point against sexualization of children should not involve sexualizing children. Period. Absolutely no context could or should possibly justify this.
The fact that the right has somehow co-opted and taken ownership of pedophilia accusations through conspiracy theories does not mean that there isn't a very large, very well-funded black market child sex industry. There is more than enough evidence for this, and simply acknowledging it does not mean you are instantly a Qanon conspiracy nutcase.
It is MASSIVELY IMPORTANT that we do not let the right poison the well on this issue and therefore direct the narrative on this.
Pedophiles deserve the wall, and we should loudly speak out against this disgusting film and any other attempts to openly commodify the aesthetic of sexualizing children in ALL its forms.

What does one have to do with the other? Has anyone ever denied that child sex trafficking isn't a thing?

You are literally regurgitating their talking points. The best example is that Sundance award link. Your lot tries so hard to make the pedophile-by-association thing, and you're using an example of someone who hasn't been associated with Sundance for 27 years.
Sundance Film Festival officials didn't immediately return an email and phone message seeking comment. His affiliation with the organization ended in 1993 when he left the advisory board, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
Pedophiles deserve the wall
That's the dead giveaway. A thinking person would phrase it, "People who molest children."
New account. First post. Not passing the vibe test...
'vibe' test? Dude I've been a ML for at least 5 years now. The fact that I have a new account on here is partly due to the fact that I only found out about this community recently.
Are we seriously not allowed to call them pedophiles anymore? Why is it 'thinking' to call them 'people who molest children'? Why should we mince words?
Also more importantly - why is the suggestion that there's a strong incentive to commodify sexualizing children such a contentious issue all of a sudden? Do the forces of capital somehow end their influence on this subject?
Why is it ‘thinking’ to call them ‘people who molest children’?
Duerte death squads are like: "people with mood disorders who might want to use drugs deserve the wall".
Pedophile is a state of mind, molesting children is an act (and not exclusive to pedos). When someone says "pedos deserve the wall" without the distinction, that's thought crime territory. Of course some people would be ok with that, but I agree with OP about moral panic slippery slopes, and homosexuality and trans issues would be next.
