After reading their posts complaining about Lemmy.ml I actually visited that place for the first time expecting super Stalinist and Maoists banning people left and right and defending genocide and instead all I saw were posts like "gee, Twitter sucks, am I right?"

Which, ironically, it the same way I found Hexbear (people saying that chapos were scary left wing extremists and me wanting to find out for myself and finding out that actually y'all are pretty cool)

lemmy.ml is just a normie place for the most part, which makes it all the more funny when people claim it's full of tankies who ban you for saying anything bad about China.

I guess some communities there might remove the lame ”lol Tiananmen Winnie the Pooh social credit!” comments, which is just like 1984

I also love how those comments are all talking about voting styles as though that will be the thing that fixes western democracy. I got caught up in that particular bit of wonkery for a long time too, feels nostalgic.

Even within that wonkery, shit like STAR is designed to have the least hated candidate (i.e. the bland shitty centrist) win. Whereas Instant Runoff is simple, easy to understand, and produces a winner that people actually want, the most liked candidate instead of the least hated. But that would be bad for centrists so it's bad.

Huh. I never really put that much thought into STAR and just sort of blandly agreed when people said that it was better than Instant Runoff because idk... it sounded aesthetically cooler? lol. brain very simple. I continued to support Instant Runoff instead mostly because it seemed more achievable due to momentum., I never really thought of the material difference between them like that. Thanks for this post.

The more I've learned about it, the more I've been convinced that China's Whole Process People's Democracy is the current world benchmark for democratic control of a state. Voting in candidates should just be one action in a constant process of polling the people for what they want or need and implementing those things, and if that system is comprehensive enough then the specific voting system you use for representatives is almost an irrelevant detail.

Well, that was a depressing read

The people there literally think that America is better then China because they can "debate and vote out Nazis"

Jesus, where do you start with such brainwashing? They really think that America is a democracy, no matter how many times the rich fucks who run their country just do whatever without oversight.

Funny how it's always "America isn't perfect, but..."

There's an old joke about an American and a Soviet sharing a beer. The American says, "You don't know what its like to have freedom. If I was in California, I could say whatever horrible thing I wanted to about Governor Ronald Reagan, and nobody would stop me."

The Soviet nods and smiles. "Perhaps this is true, in California. But do not fear. I assure you, if I was in St. Petersburg, I could also say whatever horrible thing I wanted to about Governor Ronald Reagan."

We’ve been in a post-truth era now for a number of years. There’s nothing that can be done. China has over a billion people. If they want propaganda bots to saturate the internet, they got it. Just keep promoting internet safety, critical media thinking skills, and real historical facts.

The lack of self-awareness and ironically, critical thinking skills on display in those comments is so tragic.

Marx would have been a Patriots fan. He would have had the face of Bill Belichick on his bedroom wall. He would have gotten season tickets to every game and watched all the big games at the bar with his friends, while drinking a big glass of Coor's Light. You wouldn't catch Marx dead rooting for the Green Bay Packers. Marx would agree with me that Aaron Rodgers is overrated and any pass under 40 yards isn't worth making. I love Marx so much. He's my favorite Democrat.

Yeah and I don't think anyone here is supporting Russia? I always lose my mind with how these people put words in our mouths. Not wanting to do war against a nuclear power doesn't mean we support said nuclear power.

As for China, I don't know how critical most Hexbear posters' support for them is. At the end of the day it doesn't matter much if the support is critical or not, the important thing is to oppose the manufacturing of consent. And I don't trust any leftist who doesn't understand that the bare minimum is to oppose the State Dept's line on the enemies of the US, because if we swallow it unopposed we are failing to do even the bare minimum of proletarian internationalism.

"China is authoritarian tankie regime literally 1985!"

Live in a country with an unelected head of state and government.

Said government can seize all your data from your ISP without a warrant, phone tap you with no consequences, and send secret police to spy on you.

When I visit a nearby city, every street corner is covered in cameras and sonic repellants designed to fuck with children's hearing.

Should I protest any of this the police have it in their power to arrest me at will for any reason they desire, in this country carrying glue while being in the same city as a protest or even a sufficiently large scale celebration can net you a fine and can be grounds for arrest.

Media fixates on a cultish devotion to a wartime leader, any criticism of him positions you in the crosshairs of public ridicule or worse.

Don't worry though, The West™ is free unlike those godless commies.

I saw this a lot on Mastodon and it always made me roll my eyes so hard. Like you literally use a fediverse platform you know how this works and yet you're hand wringing over the devs' politics, when it literally doesn't matter. Just join a lib instance that doesn't federate with lemmy.ml or lemmygrad or something. It's wild because even the literal Nazis are able to get over the politics of the devs, but apparently libs can't.

      • BelieveRevolt [he/him]
        ·

It's open source too, so if a dev decided to add some code that forwards the entire instance's content directly to Xi's email account, they'd know about. Or they can just fork the thing at any point and be free of the version that's obviously tainted by tankies shrug-outta-hecks

I don't think the fact that it's open source matters. I wouldn't be caught dead running Soapbox. Some libs feel the same way about Lemmy. It's pathetic though, because they all fucking know Capitalism is what's ruining the Internet.

Even if you are forking a project like this, a rapport with the developers is essential for technical support and knowhow.

To your first point, you'd have to be able to verify the code that's actually running on the server, which I don't think is possible without having admin access to the server. Any kind of test which involved sending challenges to the server could be cheated--even if you did devise a randomized scheme which could only be passed by running the code you're testing for, the server could just run a second instance of the clean code in the background used solely for that purpose. As long as all the public interfaces (both the UI and API) are the same, you'd be none the wiser. The only thing I could imagine working are side-channel attacks like measuring response times (e.g. if certain responses take longer than expected there might be additional code being run) but I have no idea how feasible that is for this particular situation and it's possible to defend against such attacks with careful coding.

But that's all made moot by your second point, at least from the perspective of an admin running their own instance, provided they audit the relevant parts of the code.
