to be fair most, if not all nintendo consoles (even their handhelds for the most part) have been physically backwards compatible with the previous generation.

Wii could play Gamecube, Wii U could play Wii/GC, etc. Switch not having a disc drive had to be the main reason behind Switch not at least being BC with Wii games.

I feel like Wii and WiiU being backwards compatible are exceptions to the rule for their home consoles.

You're right about the Gameboy and DS families, though!

Yeah none of they're systems were backward compatible, since they were all on proprietary carts. The Wii was the first to have backwards compatibility with GC because, and only its oringinal model

Idk. I feel like that would be an extremly weird call after the effort they've put into making such a massive library on Switch. I have my doubts they'll fuck this one up this time. But I guess it IS Nintendo.

Not having backwards compatibility is the one thing that would make me reconsider buying the Switch 2. I still have a huge backlog of Switch 1 game I want to play. Sony and M$ understand that new consoles have anemic launch libraries, and so you need backwards compatibility so that people will unhook their old console from the TV and plug in the new shiny.

if they don't make it backwards compatible they're fumbling the bag to an insane degree. you have a console that is basically understood as having an insane amount of titles and variety, you would have to be a fucking insane market minmax guy to not understand that "everything on the switch but better and more" is the way to go if you want to kickstart the money printer again. at least, I'd be pissed, so consider that

Two sources VGC spoke to suggested that the console could launch with an LCD screen, instead of the more premium OLED, in order to bring down costs, especially considering the increased storage needed for higher fidelity games. The current Switch comes with just 32GB of internal memory, while many current-gen PlayStation and Xbox games are over 100GB.

You can get android smartphones with 120Hz 1080p OLED displays and 128GB of internal storage for 150 US dollars. Come on Nintendo.

Also the rumoured new Nvidia Tegra T239 chipset's GPU is capable of 4TFLOPS. The latest top of the line android phones already have ARM GPUs such as the Adreno 740, capable of between 3.5-3.7TFLOPS, and have been out for six months. By next year, the latest smartphones will be more powerful than the new Nintendo switch successor.

I mean, I love the Steam Deck, but it's going to struggle to run any new, slightly demanding game at 30 FPS. I wouldn't put that in the same category as PS5, Xbox or PC no matter what marketing tricks Valve does.

This is actually reassuring to me. OLED is garbage planned-obsolescence technology, what with that never-solved burn-in problem. IPS may annoy techbros but it is far superior in terms of longevity.

      • aaaaaaadjsf [he/him, comrade/them]
        ·

Main thing with OLED is battery life on portable devices, as displaying dark colours takes much less energy on OLED. Burn in has also improved quite a lot with the new technologies such as WOLED, it's not 2015 anymore where your touchscreen keyboard or game HUD is going to burn in on the screen.

IPS longevity concerns can also be an issue with things like backlight failure. And for all the disadvantages IPS has in a battery powered portable form factor, it's not worth the advantages it provides. There's a reason practically all smartphones use OLED screens now.

I still would not use an OLED screen as a computer monitor though. That's a recipe for disaster in terms of burn in.

          ·

I've had a lot of gadgets with IPS screens for the past decade+, and not a single one has ever had a backlight failure. I've had one gadget with an OLED screen, a midrange Samsung phone from 2021, and it had burn-in within a month despite very moderate usage and endless assurances from people on various forums that OLED burn-in wasn't a problem anymore. I'm sticking with IPS until micro LED is as cheap and common as IPS. I won't be suckered again.

If you're prepared to get an entry level processor and forego 5G, you can usually pick up one from one of the Chinese brands, like Xiaomi, Oppo/realme, Poco and ZTE. Sometimes you might have to sacrifice 120hz for 90hz though.

Could maybe be slightly more powerful than the Steam Deck, at best. There's not a lot of room to make something actually portable and also more powerful at the moment until there's a shift in either battery technology or some other ways to extend or save power. Maybe switching to, like, monitor glasses or swappable batteries could help.

It's odd that they've released TOTK, Pikmin 4, and soon SMB Wonder right at the end of the Switch's lifespan. You'd think Mario, at least, would be going on the new console. Maybe that untitled Princess Peach game is going to be their launch title?

Probably yes, but not in the way you're thinking. Hardware portability, versatile enough for non-computery people to use, and the value that can be had from borrowing and swapping physical media are all things the Steam Deck is not very good at in comparison to the Switch 1. They're both fine little gadgets, but they have quite different strengths.

You are correct. Based on past consoles like the DS, supporting the last generation is the most likely scenario.
