You should not wash fortified rice, because you'd wash off the minerals it is fortified with.
I keep a small pile of gravel in my kitchen for this exact reason.
So the big bag of rice I got from Meijer is labelled 無洗米 (no wash rice), so technically it won't turn into a horrible sticky mess if you don't wash it, but it still turns out better if you do. I assume that goes for most rice in US grocery stores.
The rice I bought from a Japanese grocery store before was not that. That, you had to wash.
The real answer is that it depends on the rice.
The rice we buy is no wash, so we don't wash it. I tend to like my rice a little stickier, so it works for me. But if I'm gonna make something where the rice shouldn't be as sticky, I'd probably wash it and not use this method.
Washing the rice makes this method not work, because wet rice will not get brown and get nutty, it will instead start to cook.
Washed rice typically turns out fluffier and more thoroughly cooked, it's not just about the gumminess. Jokes aside though, it's not the end of the world if you don't wash your rice, and as other have said washing fortified rice removes most of the nutrients, so plan accordingly
Huh, I've never seen rice cooked like that. I prefer a rice cooker but maybe next time I feel like making rice on the stove I'll give that a try
No because the stuff I buy is fortified with vitamins and rinsing washes that away. I used to wash my rice because I was told it made it gummy, but I can’t tell the difference.

- Put desired amount in rice cooker
- Fill it with water, slush it around and pour water out but not the rice(2 or 3 times is enough)
- Fill water till it’s one digit of your pinky finger higher than the rice
- Press the cook knob
- Go back to posting for a bit
- Rice cooker dings. Rice is done
Put your uncooked rice in a colander or sieve. Rinse it with water until the water runs clear. Then you're ready to cook with it.
Yes of course I wash the rice lol otherwise it's super starchy and sticky. It's also why you shouldn't stir rice while it's cooking, it activates the starch by rubbing the rice against each other. It's why risotto needs so much stirring, part of the creaminess comes from the starch
