advertisements literally have the opposite effects they should have on me lmao

Remember, You are not immune to propaganda. Even if it made you hate that brand, it still now lives in your headspace, defining Snicker's place in relation to its competitors. The memetic ordinance functioned, its just missed its mark.

IIRC advertising works to at least a small degree on most people, but most people also think they're immune to advertising.

Most ads aren't try to entice you to order the product or service within a minute of seeing it. They're just trying to stay in your popular consciousness so the people that do choose to buy that product have a sense of familiarity with it.

It's an entire massive industry that could be done away with entirely and all that labor put to actual use.

Yeah some of the ads I see (and block the accounts of) on twitter are pretty puzzling. Like the average person wouldn’t be interested in it and probably couldn’t use it if they could. Ads for a tattoo parlor, a nail salon? That makes sense. Hell, even toilet paper (the idea that TP ‘needs’ iNnOvAtIoN or advertising at all is a totally separate discussion) makes sense. But you so often see ads for shit like some new financial instrument aimed at executives, and it’s like: dude, if they have that much money they probably have someone managing their shit already. Who is that ad for???

every time I see a "powered by aws" ad, it reminds me that I need to stop by the grocery store and pick up some aws on the way home

Yes. Radio ads are so bad that I would rather drive in silence than expose myself to the possibility of hearing them .

My folks still pay for cable tv (love too pay too watch commercial) and I simply can’t conceive of how my mom can just sit there watching cable all day. It’s insane. If you look at the length of episodes of shows you’ve pirated you realize that literally 1/3 of the time slot for any given cable program is reserved for invasive, unfunny, patronizing bullshit commercials.

One of the things I get out of twitter is a (very) subtle act of resistance that I find pretty cathartic: I block 100% of inorganic content. Any ad or promoted tweet gets that account blocked. It’s interesting because you can actually get to a point where you have blocked all their paying customers’ accounts and you stop seeing ads for a day or two until the next wave contracts goes into effect. The amount of people advertising on twitter since the pandemic started has increased substantially

I have a aftermarket radio in my car that is all touchscreen. I'd be lying if i said i haven almost rear ended folks in traffic trying to find the fucking mute button when commercials come on

a friend of mine (40s) has lived with his parents (70s) and they have cable tv. he has been living with them since his early 30s and he thinks he has it all figured out, because he DVRs his stories and then does that psychotic fast-forwarding thing where he stares at the TV, mechanic gripping the remote with his finger over the button while the screen flashes "random" images of giant flame-grilled burgers, corporate logos, movie stills, and sexy people holding products until the program interstitial appears and he clicks the button to go back to normal speed for Rick & Morty / South Park.

he fully believes he is now immune to advertising by engaging in this dystopian ritual. i told him there is a non-zero chance that he is more ensorcelled than ever.

I despise all advertising and go out of my way to avoid buying a product that was advertised to me. It's so dystopian that you can't go for 3 minutes without someone trying to sell you worthless shit. I write down every penny I spend and try to consume as little as possible because I hate consumerism so much.

advertising sets off an almost physical response in me—i can barely be in the same room as someone if ads are blaring. what mystifies me is how little it seems to bother some people. work breakrooms are a particularly bad place. few even mute the ads and meanwhile i'm practically vibrating in my chair trying not to shriek lol

yeah i use ablockers, but u cant avoid them on tv and shit. i think that partially is the reason why i hate them so much, cuz i never see them. and when one finally slips through i get really fucking annoyed

Grab a raspberry pi (the 3s are pretty cheap nowadays) and install pihole and point your router's DNS at the pi. A quick search should find enough tutorials on how to set one up, it's pretty easy even for non-techies.

Not only do ads make me less likely to buy a product, if you are a content creator and you drive your revenue with sponsored, custom in-video ad breaks I am increasingly likely to stop watching your content

Thats why i cant stand living without adblock. I even have gone out of my way to install an adblocker and special youtube client on my fire tv stick.

It always blows my mind to remember that most people don't use AdBlock.

I tried turning it off not long ago only to find YouTube had doubled the number of ads and has made them unskippable. Needless to say, AdBlock went right back on.

How can you put adblock on those fire stick things? Didn't know that was possible.

The magic works because the OS is based on Android and it allows for the installation of apps outside the store. For general adblock, i use Blokada which works by setting up a local VPN that filters out ad traffic. For youtube tho, they somehow manage to bypass it on tv. For that case i installed Smart Youtube TV which uses its own client with an inbuilt ad filter.

Ads have affected the way I interact with websites now so that some of the time I'll complete ignore some relevant part of the site since it looks like an ad and be completely at a loss for how to navigate the page.

Yes. I was planning on buying some Fritos for my chili. Then I thought, wait a minute, I only want these cause I saw an ad two weeks ago where they put Fritos in chili. But I managed to find some knockoff Fritos so all good.
