      “why can’t I n-slur if it’s in a hip-hop song, they use it”

[Insert that one scene from Sorry To Bother You here]

There is honestly a lot more that can be said about slur discourse and non-marginalized enjoyment of marginalized people's stories/media/culture, but maybe here and now isn't the best time.

Hi mom, I'm in the screenshot!

I lose faith in humanity every day. When we added a rule in my chatroom that prohibited people from using normalized ableist slurs, huge arguments broke out and many people had to be removed. All because it inconvenienced them slightly to not make several other members feel dehumanized.

I can't even get my own family to stop using several slurs.

Similar things happened here on hexbear over the year or so after we launched. People who couldn't be assed to do a modicum of self crit blew up for several days and were banned/left and all that remained were the actual cool people who were capable of marginally changing their language and respecting others. Purges like that are a pain to deal with in the moment but absolutely necessary to maintain a healthy site culture.

It took us about 200 years to make white people stop saying the N word in public. We succeeded only somewhat. They're very bitter about it still, and they're not going to give up other slurs without a fight.

I'm an expert on white people and this is really messed up to make fun of. They get very distressed if you don't allow them to say slurs. Not cool.

This is the same argument kids used to make for saying fggot. It's just "the intent is different so it's ok". It's bullshit and the fggot comparison should be made every time.

by their logic, the (mostly) scottish slang for a chinese takeaway is not actually racist because it isn't "used in a racist manner"

it's literally the slur beginning with ch btw

i didnt make the connections with that, in the south 90% of convenience stores are managed by Chinese people, paquistani people, arab peope or south american. The chinese people being the first people that started, When i say that i didnt mean it in a racist way

I felt that calling them Chinos fed into racist tropes that the goods sold by Chinese people, and by extension the people themselves are poor quality, cheap and 'found on every corner'.

Yes, that is sadly common. I will re-evaluate on how i speak. Thank you for the external perspective. <3

Hey thank you so much for like, actually going at people in that thread, along with all the other excellent posters of hexbear.

To be entirely honest, I made that post while I was waiting on some stuff to finish at work. I was browsing all, saw a unix porn post, and got reminded of that shitty term. I once made a similar post in the old reddit-logo r/unixporn, but you can guess what the response was there. When I got home I found my inbox was absolutely blown out. I had to choose between wading into the already considerable thread, or playing a jrpg all evening with my partner, and I chose the latter. I appreciate everyone backing me up after I kinda bailed once the pin was pulled ohnoes

At least calling Americans "burgers" has some bite to it because burgers are unhealthy fast food.
Tea drinkers for Brits? Doesn't really do anything.

It's fundamentally harder to hurt rich white people because the power dynamics are different.

The punch hits harder going downwards rather than upwards.

don't have one on food, but as @Trudge@lemmygrad.ml eluded to, we have one based on being "lower class whites" - convicts

it's not even a slur, but yanks and brits try to use it as an insult as it is an attempt to punch down. as you think about it more, it really is crouched in white supremacy because the only thing people throw at us is that we should be insulted for our genocidal shithole being a prison colony

I know this is mostly a dunk but to seriously answer the question, slurs have never made any logical sense.

For example, the slur "negr*" just means "black" in Spanish and saying that someone is "black" in English isn't even generally offensive. However, the slur is still definitely racist and offensive.

uh, american pickups/"trucks" (it's a fucking ute ffs) are starting to be pretty widely called "yank tanks" in australia and widely derided - sometimes deliberately scratched up

not downplaying the racism of the r*cer term, but anti-kkkrackoid sentiment is starting to spread sicko-crowd

Buddy, i dont know how you thought “rice rocket” wasnt a term thrown with specific hard feelings in mind. Just because a halfassed reclamation could be said to have been done in the early to mid 00s doesnt mean it wasnt used with the ethnicity of car manufacturer or oftentimes it’s driver in mind.

What a weird thing to say... The world isn't the US yk. Japanese and Korean cars weren't that common even as late as the 80-s. Weird reclamation. People started using the term in the early odds...

"Rice rocket" is aking to calling American cars "Cracker cars".

        Or even worse "N*gger wagons"

You are condensing their entire existence into "the people who eat rice" like it is no big deal.

For what its worth, my dad was a huge MOPAR guy. Like, big time Detroit loyalist. His whole life and career had been spent restoring muscle cars. His shop had a metal poster on the wall that said something like "screw JDM, buy domestic" but much much more racist. He used ricer all the time, and absolutely as a pejorative, as the word was intended. Doesn't really matter how "sanitized" it has since become.

TLDR; The only context I have for the term "ricer" is my extremely racist father, and that's enough for me to know the word should be retired.

At least where I was, there were basically zero black people, the"N" word here was (typically but not exclusively) used is rap music and movies...

If I go any further, this gets so offensive to the point where censoring it is not sufficient.

I was really wondering why that term was being used in these posts. It definitely seemed problematic on first glance. Importing Car Culture BS into UI customization discussions is just not a vibe I want to be around.
