Seriously how do people live like this
while i hate suburban culture and find many elements obviously garbage, i think there's a trend among american leftists to view the phenomena of suburbia as simply an aesthetic choice to be criticized on those grounds
its not about the suburbs being bad because they're aesthetically monstrous or because they're architecturally wasteful etc, it's about understanding the material history of their existence
while all of those aesthetic complaints are true, none of it is as relevant as the simple truth that A) the suburbs exist because of racism (white flight) and B) the suburbs can only exist because of a massive amount of stolen land and wealth
by making it purely about the aesthetics youre never going to win anyone over because the essential offering to well off white people is "you can have your own little feudal empire to lord over," and that will forever be more captivating than any aesthetic points you raise
I think the focus on aesthetics also have its origin as a reaction against "commieblocks bad".
But have you not considered that the wetlands that had to be drained for this development were producing 0 value for the shareholders?!
Building a room to house the car that you need to live in the house that needs to be big enough to have a room for the car.
Why would you need a fence? If you go outside for any reason other than mowing the lawn, you are not welcome in this neighborhood.
Some days I wish I could be blissfully ignorant enough to live like this. Just me, my cat, and my grill. Ideally I'd have a fence and a neighbor I'm cool enough with to poke my head over the fence to say hello to occasionally, maybe have a few brews on my back deck every now and then right in front of my nice grill. Maybe even go over to their place on Tuesdays for Yahtzee and other miscellaneous tabletop games.
what is bad about this beyond the gross waste of area? Public housing doesn’t look better and is even more cookie cutter lol
A few reasons off the top of my head:
-
Many of these developments are completely unwalkable. No stores or schools or public amenities in sight. You want to get anywhere, it's by car. That's inherently unsustainable.
-
putting so many cars on the road inherently creates strain on road and other infrastructure, which further fucks up the environment with the need to build highways and arterial roads.
-
Lawns. Ick.

The complete lack of trees. Just green lawn. And you get fined by the HOA if you don’t keep the fucker green
