"Social fascist" needs to come back as a label, and that applies triple to self-ID'd "progressives"
People seethe when I describe the Democratic party as predominantly a center-right party.
I've been reading Aztec poetry that was preserved by Spanish monks from the time when the conquistadores destroyed the Aztec empire. It's devastating to read their thoughts on how they perceived the annihilation of their world, and I can only imagine that the lamentations of our generation will be similar when we realize we've fucked up our habitat beyond repair.
That's my spooky thought for this hallowed eve. :hahaha:
"We have seen bloodshed and pain
where once we saw beauty and valor.
We are crushed to the ground;
we lie in ruins.
There is nothing but grief and suffering
in Mexico and Tlatelolco,
where once we saw beauty and valor.
Have you grown weary of your servants?
Are you angry with your servants,
O Giver of Life?"
Nice find. This is a stanza from what I was reading:
Worms swarm through streets and plazas,
and the walls are spattered with brains.
Red are the waters, as they are dyed
and when we drink them,
it's as if we drink saltpeter.
That is surprisingly mild a response.
A Dominican Priest in the 1520s wrote this.
"We can estimate very surely and truthfully that in the forty years that have passed, with the infernal actions of the Christians, there have been unjustly slain more than twelve million men, women, and children. In truth, I believe without trying to deceive myself that the number of the slain is more like fifty million.
After the wars and the killings had ended, when usually there survived only some boys, some women, and children, these survivors were distributed among the Christians to be slaves.
Their reason for killing and destroying such an infinite number of souls is to acquire gold, and to swell themselves with riches in a very brief time and thus rise to a high estate disproportionate to their merits.
It should be kept in mind that their insatiable greed and ambition, the greatest ever seen in the world, is the cause of their villainies.
With my own eyes I saw Spaniards cut off the nose and ears of Indians, male and female, without provocation, merely because it pleased them to do it.
...Likewise, I saw how they summoned the caciques and the chief rulers to come, assuring them safety, and when they peacefully came, they were taken captive and burned.
They laid bets as to who, with one stroke of the sword, could split a man in two or could cut off his head or spill out his entrails with a single stroke of the pike.
They took infants from their mothers' breasts, snatching them by the legs and pitching them headfirst against the crags or snatched them by the arms and threw them into the rivers, roaring with laughter and saying as the babies fell into the water, "Boil there, you offspring of the devil!"
They attacked the towns and spared neither the children nor the aged nor pregnant women nor women in childbed, not only stabbing them and dismembering them but cutting them to pieces as if dealing with sheep in the slaughter house.
They made some low wide gallows on which the hanged victim's feet almost touched the ground, stringing up their victims in lots of thirteen, in memory of Our Redeemer and His twelve Apostles, then set burning wood at their feet and thus burned them alive.
With still others, all those they wanted to capture alive, they cut off their hands and hung them round the victim's neck, saying, "Go now, carry the message," meaning, Take the news to the Indians who have fled to the mountains.
They made a grid of rods which they placed on forked sticks, then lashed the victims to the grid and lighted a smoldering fire underneath, so that little by little, as those captives screamed in despair and torment, their souls would leave them.
The Indians were totally deprived of their freedom and were put into the harshest, fiercest, most horrible servitude and captivity which no one who has not seen it can understand. Even beasts enjoy more freedom when they are allowed to graze in the field.
The conquistadors were the worst of the worst, pirates and monsters. Their conduct was so depraved and outrageous the Catholic Church invented the concept of universal human rights (in the west) to try to stem the violence. Didn't work, but they did try.
However strange it may seem, many poets chose to end their lives with a satirical poem, and some even mock this mockery itself.
One kyoka poet wrote down, before dying, the well-known death poem of another poet, prefacing it with the words "I borrowed this poem from someone," and adding after it, "This is the last act of plagiarism I shall commit in this world."
Morikawa Kyoriku (1656-1715), a pupil of Basho's, also wrote a kyoka death poem. The poem and its background have been left for us:
Kyoriku ... came from an ancient samurai family and was a talented painter. When he became Basho's pupil, Basho said to him, "For painting, you shall be my master; for haiku, I shall be yours."
Kyoriku was extremely proud of his talents and considered other poets no better than dogs. . . . He would boast of himself, "I alone have gone straight to the heart of Basho's poetry."
Before his death, Kyoriku wrote:
Till now I thought
that death befell
the untalented alone.
If those with talent, too,
must die
surely they make
a better manure?
Another writer puts Kyoriku's apparent boastfulness in a light that is probably more in keeping with the spirit of his death poem. When asked by a man to teach him the art of poetry, Kyoriku refused, saying that he was "not talented enough." Surprised at this answer, the man reminded Kyoriku of his extravagant praise of himself - to this Kyoriku answered, "All that is only a joke. Don't take it seriously."
So sick of people saying "liberal has a different meaning in America". No it doesn't. Liberals in America are liberals everywhere in the world. What actually happened was that left-wing in the US had its definition changed to mean "liberal".
Americans are confused that the Liberal party in Australia is the right wing party.
I've seen this way too often. I told it to my mom and she was flabbergasted. Then I told her they were more similar to the Dems than the Republicans and she was even more confused.
How'd you find out. Did she say she was voting Trump or like did she post the 14 words on Facebook
no she just said she supports some very right wing characters in my country which may or may not be the USA
edit: but she did also say she hopes trump wins
so did anyone else just not think about halloween this year or is it me?
I had a birthday and didn't remember it was my birthday until someone said happy birthday at midnight lmao let alone halloween.
Most of the people I know are doing fun stuff because they don't care about corona so I keep getting reminders
Almost always do because the day following it is my birthday.
That and not really much going on this year, not handing out candy and probably just gonna cozy up and watch movies thru the night or something.
Mhm. It's the only holiday I care about but I've spent the better part of this year wanting to die.
Imagine not using it as an excuse to binge watch horror movies all month.
If you go to the ER with chest pains, they move your ass through fast. Even here in hell where I live. My first big panic attack I was sure my heart was about to fucking explode so I drove to the ER. Instant EKG and chest x-ray. Waited about 15 mins in a room for a doctor to tell me it was a panic attack and treat me like a fucking idiot.
To be fair, I guess I am an idiot.
But here in hell, since I had recently lost my job because of overwhelming anxiety I couldn't fucking handle, hence the panic attack, they handed me a $6k bill just to make sure I knew everything fucking sucks and nobody gives a fuck about me.
My mother used to be so deep into satanic panic stuff that she banned me from playing Pokemon. I never had Pokemon to begin with but she banned it in case I ever got it as a gift from relatives or whatever.
Have you listened to Robert Evans's recent series on the Satanic Panic? It's jaw dropping how dumb this country was and is.
Also mild spoiler:
spoiler
At the end of episode 1 when Robert mentions there's Jeffrey Epstein victims who are QAnon believers my heart shattered.
Edit: correctly formatted spoiler because I'm a lib
for a spoiler you need to replace the "___" with the text to be hidden.
why cant people (white westerners) understand that a muslim asking you to please not draw a picture of Muhammad is not violating your freedom of speech, or oppressing you, or saying that islam is the true faith and death to christians, or even trying to insult you, the muslims here are not gonna behead you or be happy they behead you for drawing Muhammad.
please, have basic decency, just dont draw the prophet as a form of protests against the islamists, it does nothing and just offends all muslims, please have some basic form of empathy
I feel weird about this one. On the one hand its a dick move to do it. On the other hand its a really weird hill to die on. I get its culturally important to people, but you really got pick battles with more worthy opponents
I don't know about you, but I can't imagine drawing the prophet for any reason in the first place so it doesn't seem hard to avoid.
Me either, but I can't picture fighting chuds over shitty webcomics to be a fight worth having.
I know this was a blind spot for me. It's been like 5 years since I last thought about it (I've developed my thinking a lot in that time) and now seeing the way that some of r*ddit is reacting makes me glad to be out of there. The only people they are going to offend are people who agree with them anyway. Here we are going to continue doing our best to make everyone who is part of the left feel welcomed.
Swallow your pride if you have to. You can do a lot more for the cause using them as an unwitting sponsor
You can do it comrade. You’ve been here before. Deep breaths.
One of the things I've been spending some time pondering is power relations and where power resides in the world around me. It kinda strikes me that a lot of people aren't aware when they are in a position to do things, to use that power they have, be it administrative, decision, etc. Or are aware but prefer not to, are scared to do so, or think that using it would be somehow uncout, even if that is their actual job. Half of the lack of change in the world seems to be not because people don't have the power, not because they like the system, but because people fear change.
I've run into some sort of society-wide learned helplessness several times in several contexts, including professionally. Maybe especially professionally. There seems to be some sort of giant personal cliff people need to scale to learn that they can actually do things, of their own volition, without being told to, not picking some options that were presented for them.
I don't think it's fear of change. I've been all over the place in what it actually is. Societal conditioning from school? The fear that people won't like your choice? The fear you'll do it wrong? The fear that if you start making actual decisions you'll suddenly realize how much of your life was wasted before you started doing it? Probably could be any number of problems, like that proverb about every unhappy family being unhappy in its own unique way.
Most of the advice I have gotten on careers has been, "work as hard as possible (or not) but whatever you do, don't rock the boat." To make change, you have to convince people. I don't think anyone here is confident in their ability to convince someone of something they didn't already believe so the feeling should be familiar.Persuasion is a hard skill to learn and not a lot easier to practice.
Perhaps Bane's portrayal in the batman movie was the only way they can imagine being able to carry out this type of change. Perhaps they are just shit at persuasion.
Thats the point. Every villian on tv is "wants to improve things too much" every political speech is about it, half of grade school history is about the dangers of change. That is propaganda we are given so we don't try
Short horror story: I woke up in the middle of the night and heard noises from downstairs, I followed the noise to my kitchen and found a skeltal raiding my fridge. I tried to ask the skeltal what it was doing but my terrified and shocked voice came out as nothing but a hoarse whimper. Without talking the skeltal turned to me, downed an entire carton of milk and, empowered by calcium, punched clean through my wall before rattling away. On the wind as it left I heard it's final message: "Get spooked kid lol"
This has been my official request for /c/nosleep
Happy Halloween Chapo 🎃
I certainly will, bone health is incredibly important, especially for those that are just skeleton ☠️
I was taught the milk = strong bones thing was for growing children only, true or no?
I wove a big spider web on my porch I'm real proud of and I don't want to take it down. I put in a deer skull I found so it's extra spooky.
