Members pay an entrance fee of about HK$400,000 (S$68,000) and some have been vocal in their opposition to the redevelopment plan, citing ecological, commercial and social reasons to make their case.

Nobody working class is missing out on their golf because of this.

Beijing directly exhorted local officials to fix the problems in the aftermath of the mass protests that rocked the city in 2019, demanding that Hong Kong get rid of so-called cage homes or subdivided apartments by 2049.

Based Beijing.

The decision to build on the golf course also reflects how old business elites in Hong Kong are losing political sway as more staunchly pro-Beijing loyalists gain ground.

sicko-charging

When Beijing’s top official for the city visited it in April, he did not meet the real estate developers association, which represents some of the richest families, raising questions over whether the interests of the wealthy clans are even a major concern to the top leadership.

party-sicko

Mr Zeman argued that shrinking the golf course hits at the heart of the way business is done in the city. “A lot of deals are done on the golf course all over the world for business people,” he said.

Fuck off back to your offices and make your deals there you fucking ghouls.

“It is wrong in today’s climate” to take back part of the golf course, he added, at a time when Hong Kong desperately wants to attract businesses and people from overseas.

michael-laugh Nice fucking word choice, climate, yeah, that's the word I wanna use.

I'd also be okay with someone calling their bluff and turning the thing into a nature reserve or park.

I knew a guy who was complaining that the Chinese state seized his capital investments. He did not like it when I tried to explain that expecting the communist party to look after your capital and then getting mad when they take it is not reasonable

First they came after the developers, and I said nothing, for I wasn't a developer. Then they came for the landlords, and I said nothing, for I wasn't a landlord. ...

This article had us fucking rolling, it reads like a joke news story in a video game. These people are malding so much over their precious golf that they're stumbling over each other to embarrass themselves about it.

The idea of redeveloping golf courses into housing is much more mature in Singapore, where the government laid out a plan in 2014 for how it will balance the need for housing with golfing.

The wealthy clans can't live without their golf! This is cultural genocide!

This made me look up whether Xi golfs, and I found this gem from CNN in 2017:

Xi, an avid soccer fan, isn’t known to be a golfer – and he’s been waging a war on the sport in his country.

Since he came to power nearly five years ago, Xi’s government has shut down scores of golf courses across China and effectively banned the 88 million members of the ruling Communist Party from playing.

      sicko-yes There is hope yet

Compromise idea: Build 18 buildings roughly in the footprint of the greens of each hole, and put the golf course on top. Golfers can either take 2 elevators between holes, or walk a tightrope.

Golfers cannot retain their character wothout golf carts. If they lug their gear and hike from hole to hole, especially up and down stairs, it loses some of its bourgeois character.

I have a better compromise plan

Only golf that is permitted after the revolution will be a driving range with current country club members "playing" as targets

They still get to play the "sport" they love, vocation becomes vacation and so on
