The snakes at the BBC (and some US outlets) are trying their hardest to tie this to the Hariri trial and all but saying this is a bombing by Hezbollah. They were "reporting" this as soon as the explosions occured and when they has less than no evidence.
Nevermind the fact that Israel has made outright military threats against Lebanon in the last couple of weeks.... Gotta be Hezbollah, right?
Sentiment on the ground in Lebanon seems to be that it was an Israeli missile, but they didn’t intend to hit a depot of ammonia nitrate.
I am in awe at the shockwave.

Boom so big it was apparently heard in Cyprus, hundreds of kilometers away.
Regardless of whether this was intentional or an accident, that’s fucking intense and scary as hell :|
Dumbass getting dunked on

But have you ever lit a firecracker off and had a mushroom cloud appear? How about a sparkler? See my logic is infallible.
Oh fuck my lighter and sparkles are now nuclear powered, someone tell some scientists so I can save the world with my mini nuclear reactors
Under every Twitter thread about this there are dozens of morons saying 1) mushroom cloud = nuclear and 2) it definitely a bombing because fireworks wouldn't make such a big boom
That this wasn't fireworks, the reports were all lies, because clearly this was no regular explosion, but an
ATOMIC BLAST
Was a guy saying that a mushroom cloud means that it was a nuclear explosion. The idea that a nuclear country (or any other nuclear entity) would use their bomb in Beirut of all places out of nowhere is ridiculous.
Also mushroom clouds form from plenty of large explosions (nuclear or not) cause the blast creates a huge vacuum which then implodes and sends the air rushing upward from the center.
Eh. Israel could conceivably do it, but not in present circumstances.
Yeah but are they really going to start WW3 over their back and forth with Lebanon? I know things are hostile, but that would be a LOT.
Right now authorities are saying it was fireworks.
Were probably not going to know for some time.
Ammonium Nitrate. Commonly used in explosives and fertiliser. This is nowhere near the first time such a thing has happened. Texas and China have both suffered large Ammonium Nitrate blasts.
based on the videos i’ve seen, it’s pretty clearly a fireworks explosion
Definitely not looking like a bombing. But “clearly a fireworks explosion”? Possibly, not clearly. Wouldn’t a weapon or ammo or chemical depot be more probable in a harbor?
There was a fireworks warehouse in the centre of the explosion and you can see the fireworks going off before the big boom. Might be other stuff in there, but it involved fireworks.
Definitely some fireworks (can be seen in some angles) but no one knows yet. This'll be the biggest fireworks explosion I've ever seen if it is
My father-in-law has a place in Beirut pretty far away. Apparently all the windows got blown out. Damn
Here's a list of orgs people could donate to, including the Lebanese Red Cross and Food Bank.

If you remember that explosion in Tianjin China a few years ago (2015), that was the result of 800 tons of ammonium nitrate igniting.
Reports coming out say this was the result of 2,750 tons ammonium nitrate igniting.
I know there are still a ton of unknowns, but keep in mind this kind of thing is a sad feasibility anywhere in the world with rampant regulatory capture and neoliberal ideals.
