Inspired by a recent thread. I've seen a bunch of people advocating for no shampoo lately, and I want to get to the bottom of this.
Anti-shampoo people, show yourselves, I want answers. Should we all stop doing shampoo? Is it a thing for everyone or only certain hair types? Is it superior to good shampoo + good conditioner? Do you need to do literally anything with it if you're doing no shampoo or just let it go wild? This whole thing flies in the face of everything I think I know about hair and I want ANSWERS dammit 😤
What did humans do before shampoo? Did everyone just have frizzy, dry, or oily hair? No, they washed it in a fucking river with water because your hair already has oils in it that keep it healthy. No, this isn't a nature worship meme, shampoo is bad because it strips oils from your hair and causes your hair to overproduce oil to compensate, causing a awful cycle of dryness, oiliness, and torment. So just stop, wash your hair with water in the shower, and in a few weeks you hair (anyone's hair, doesn't matter what type) will stop overproducing oil and you will be gucci.
yep. i only wash my hair if it's actually dirty dirty.
sometimes I'll use conditioner. when i tell people i don't wash my hair with shampoo they are shocked.
I love it when I go a week without washing my hair and my scalp starts hurting. Say no to shampoo. Everyone should have a painful scalp all the time.
Wha?! I mean, you you want me to look like a greasy fuck?
What's wrong with shampoo?
You get about a week of being an oily fuck and then it goes down cause it's not trying to compensate for shampoo drying your hair out. Barely ever washing my hair has made it look a billion times better and with less maintenance.
If this is just a trick to make me look greasy for a week I'm gonna be so mad
Your hair will be gross and you'll wanna shampoo it, just rinse real good. The grease period is real but after that you have a lifetime of way easier hair to deal with.
I have gone for ~1.5 weeks without shampoo and my scalp literally formed a crust of dandruff so
hey, op here, OMG I JUST WANTED TO VENT ABOUT MY MOM WHY HAS THE DISCOURSE GONE THIS WAY
😶 Oops
I'm sorry if I caused frustration, this really is something I've been seeing for a while and the people in that thread reminded me of it is all.
Yeah my hair will start to smell if I go more than a few days without shampoo. No internet fads can change my mind that stinky = bad.
Same here. Any more and it'll poof. Any less and it smells horrible.
People tend to shampoo too much and damage there hair, but there’s nothing inherently bad about shampoo
I live in a boiling hot, humid sub-tropical place. If I don't shampoo my hair every day it goes oily and gross.
My hair smells like cheese if I don't shampoo regularly. Just let the conditioner soak in for five minutes and it's fine.
Rise up, we have nothing to lose but our scales :sadness:
Would the injectables be good for that? Had to start Humira for my boneitis and I am now scale-free.
I read once from anti-shampoo types on r*ddit or somewhere that the shampoo strips natural oils from your hair, and if you stop your hair will be real fucking greasy for a couple of weeks but then it will balance back out and be better, but that sounds like a whole load of bullshit to me and I'm not gonna spend a fortnight with gross greasy hair to find out
I dunno man. Our health teacher said something like "do not was your hair more than 1 in 2 days"
I have only ever had hair no longer than shoulder length, but nothing except water and wax/hair spray has touched my hair for close to a decade, and my hair looks, feels and smells perfectly normal (except it’s going grey lmaoooo).
I literally just scrub my hair with my hands while the shower washes through it.
I have heard that that’s just a phase for a week or two and you push through it, but tbh I don’t really remember that being an issue for me.
The whole anti-shampoo argument is that shampoo just strips out your natural oils, and then conditioner puts in a bunch of artificial oils. So why not cut out the middle men and just let your hairs natural oils do the work. The same argument says that the fact you’re stripping out your hairs natural oil makes it over-produce those oils, so it takes a little while to adjust back to normal levels when you stop using shampoo, hence the greasiness.
Also even if you do use shampoo it’s supposed to be not be more than every 2 or 3 days apparently.
Interesting, I have heard arguments about using less shampoo but i've never cared enough to actually try it. Maybe ill try every other day and see how that works.
