The goal of the name change is that people who come here won't take the podcast as seriously ("oh this is just that podcast nobody likes. They even changed the name of the site, see?"). It'll also be harder to find this site if "chapo" is not in the name.

You can already see the campaign to discredit the podcast on its way. They go for easy targets like the less serious episodes or anything with Amber, which preys on your internalised misogyny.

People making this post into a copypasta are also CIA btw.

Bit idea: The CIA is trying to get us to change our name because they don't want people to associate the podcast they back with us.

Changing this site's name to Hexbear is a bad idea especially after your founder is accused of pedophilia, hopefully for obvious reasons.

Chapo is the name this site is founded on and how new users find it, it's what sets this apart from some Mastodon site or any random forum set up that claims to be the new home for whatever Communist Online Utopia. We're here from chapo, this is a replacement for that, just please let it be that.

But hexbear was one of the only ideas that was simultaneously meaningless and unfunny

FWIW, a fork doesn't need interesting branding like a public website that seeks growth does.

Bear = "don't poke the bear" = strong and fearsome, evokes Russia, which as every bona fide liberal knows, means communism

Hex = associated with witches, also is the polygon that makes the most robust tesselation, and 6 is a perfect number

              Hexbear is our totem.

peepee = "don't piss us off" = warm and wet, evokes tropical weather, which as every bona fide liberal knows, means the global south

poopoo = associated with the top deck of a pirate ship, also is the sound of dismissal, as we throw off the chains of neoliberal thought

                peepeepoopoo is our totem

fr though I don't get why so many of you are so attached to the chapo name. The old sub wasn't some amazing gigantic hub of activity, you can find plenty of niche subs with 150k accounts subbed to it. By now we've probably gotten like 99% of all the people from the old sub who are gonna join anyway but also somehow would never find it if it didn't have the Chapo name. And yeah, the podcast is bad and represents a lot of what's wrong with the white left in the US and disassociating from it would be a good thing.

The old sub wasn’t some amazing gigantic hub of activity

Just addressing this one assertion: This is patently false. The subreddit was often in the top 100 most active subreddits, punching far above what its weight in subscribers would suggest it could.

I get not wanting to idealize the old sub, but the push to avoid doing so has veered into this very weird "the old sub was just 15 redditoids and crabboi" revisionism.

There's actually a serious effort to change the name? If the name changes, I'm 99% leaving.

"Chapo" stands for something, a real world thing. Even if the podcast has problems - it's an anchor to the real world. CTH is a group of people committed to a leftist set of principles, connected to lots of other leftists who can hold their feet to the fire. The memory of CTH the subreddit represents how popular a leftist community can be.

What is this site? The property of a bunch of unelected, unvetted anonymous individuals? I mean, they have to be anonymous, that's understandable - but why should anyone trust them who doesn't know them personally? What are their goals, what are their politics? Who the fuck can know for sure?

Chapo is an idea worthy of trust, which is something that's lacking on the Internet. A site without a connection to something worthy of trust is gonna go bust. You'd be trying to attract people to a dark alleyway saying "would you like some communism".

If you want to set up a revolutionary cell - don't make it public. If you're running a public site - don't entirely disconnect it from the real world.

Anything we change it to is going to be just as hated and stupid if not more so. Also it is strange how admins fell for obvious trolls who really wanted to change the name
